I had so much fun. The team was patient and knowledgeable while learning a new skill. Love my new piece of fabric, it is a great reminder of my time here. I plan on going for a day class next time.
This was a really fun and informative class. The instructors were so helpful and patient and were really concerned that I had a good experience. It is not necessary to have any prior weaving experience in order to take the class. I particularly enjoyed learning about the different weaving patterns used by the various hill tribes. The class is held above a fair trade store containing various items woven by the different hill tribes. The store came into existence to ensure that the weavers receive a fair price for their work.I highly recommend this class.
I had a wonderful time learning the art of weaving the Lahsu style. Everything was prepared: you geta little snack and local tea and can first read in a nice manual with pictures about the technique. Once you sit next to your teacher and see the handling it all becomes clear. The teachers are patient and have a keen eye to see mistakes in the handling or in your posture, so you won’t hurt your back. I could have done it for hours, so meditative, nice environment and a kind connection to art of weaving.
I realised only few days before leaving Chiang Mai, that a weaving class would be something I would possibly enjoy. I emailed Thai tribal crafts fair trade and fortunately they responded very promptly and arranged to hold a class for me the very next day. I was the only one taking the class that day, which was great. Until then I’d never done it before and the lady explained and showed me everything so well, I was able to easily understand the principle. She was really lovely and let me get on with the weaving, but sat nearby in case I’d need any help. Overall, it was a great experience and might even get me to take up weaving back home. If you’re into crafts, this is definitely something you should do.
A great experience learning about this traditional craft. A must if you are in Chaing Mai. The teachers were wonderful showing 2 novices how to produce a small sample of this weaving. Gave us a wonderful insight into this craft including how time consuming it is to make these works of art. Not far from town, easy walking distance.
I can not recommend this class enough! I am an avid seamstress and wanted to learn more about the weaving process and Thai culture. May was my teacher and she was incredibly insightful, talented and gave very clear instructions (wonderful English language skills!). Although this was my first time weaving, with her guidance, I caught on right away! I made a beautiful pattern that was about 20 inches long. I learned so much and May was so sweet and a great conversationalist! She will work with you at your pace and comfort! A bonus is that the class includes beverages, snacks and a little gift. I want to go back and do the whole day class because you learn how to assemble the loom and spool the thread. If you have a free morning, afternoon or day in Chiang Mai, do this class! The artist within you will glow!
This class was excellent. They go out of their way to be welcoming–even though I was only one person, they gave me two trays of snacks and unlimited tea! The class takes place above a great little free trade shop full of handmade goodies. The class itself is relaxed and delightful. After a brief demo, my teacher (May, she’s awesome) helped me strap myself into the backstrap loom and help me slowly put all the little actions together to make a lovely little placemat It’s (of course) harder than it looks, and I got a full core workout while chatting to May about Thailand and the village she grew up in. Don’t hesitate: take this class!
Such a special one on one experience with May! She was so warm and inviting. I learned how to weave and had great conversation! Also she made an array of lovely snacks and drinks. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone wanting to learn a very special craft in a very personal and cultural way. Thank you so much for having me! 🙂
Our visit to the village of Saluang gave us a good look at traditional Thai fabric crafts. Our walk through the village to see people in their homes was a bit arduous but a van is available. After a really delicious lunch (including vegetarian option) we got to work! There were hands-on opportunities to weave, spin thread and embroider. We also saw how to dye raw cloth using local plants and bark. This was a worthwhile trip to get a better appreciation of traditional tribal skills.
I’m so glad I did this. It was so fun to learn a new skill, and everyone there was very nice and friendly. The shop downstairs was also amazing! I would do this again if I visit Chiang Mai in the future.
