Walked to the Healing Family Foundation after my visit to Wat Ket Karam. They are very welcoming, do great work & appreciate your support.
Popped in after visiting Wat Ket. And what a lovely welcome!Chatted to an older chap who told us about the project, his son is one of the resident artists. They invite you to have a go at the loom, and have numerous crafted items for sale. Bought a few gifts for folk back home – a few place mats, coasters, and fun little woven elephant bags (all easy to fit into a rucksack!). My daughter (12) bought an elephant t-shirt that she loves. Price was cheaper than buying in the touristy night bazaar, the products are unique and lovely, and you get a clear sense that your money is going to a great cause. What could beat that?!
This is a little weaving shop with an attached store. The items sold are incredibly inexpensive; and clearly not simply redundant of what everyone else is selling. The selection isn’t wide, but it is nice. Best of all are the weavers. The foundation is a work/learning center for special needs kids/adults. You can expect tremendous smiles and enthusiasm from the weavers. Their enthusiasm is contagious. Go.
Tucked away, but well worth finding. This is a weaving hall with a shop attached that sells the products that are made there. The products are made with incredible love, but are very inexpensive and I understand that 90% of the selling price goes to the talented artists that make them. This a foundation that teaches skills to developmentally disabled kids and adults, who are a joy to interact with on your visit. Their smiles and pleasure in your visit make the effort to find this place so worthwhile.
This is a wonderful place. Families of people with cognitive disabilities hired a teacher from Japan. They run a sheltered workshop for people with cognitive disabilities. The artists are trained in weaving, but they are also taught functional skills. It is a wonderful grass roots “family.” The weavings are sold as long pieces, or as decoration on t-shirts. They also make beautiful purses and bags.I highly recommend visiting this school. The artists are lovely, and they enjoy showing off their work.
Experience the delight of special needs artists greeting you, thankful for your visit. Parents of adults with various disabilities (e.g. Downs, mobility) started this artist community. The artists sell various products that integrate weaving- a skill they love to demonstrate. Support them by buying their unique creations. Minutes walk from the footbridge over the Ping River. The visit was quite by accident and one of the highlights of our trip.
Best find in Chiang Mai. A non profit organisation with beautiful crafts created in-house by members with physically and intellectually disadvantage. The elephant t-shirts are so cute and funky! They have a huge assortment of products from beautiful shopping bags, to scarves. There you get to meet the creators and see them at work.English friendly and very personable members!
I heard of this charity through Trip Advisor and i think that it is very meaningful to come to this place to support this charity. I bought coin purses, recyclable cloth fold-able bags, key chains etc. They also have scarfs, T-Shirts, greeting cards. These are all hand made by the intellectually challenged and if you do come to Chiang Mai, do go and support them. They are located quite near to Central Festival Mall, so you may drop by before you go for your shopping.
You can cheer up peoples with disability and thier families here by visiting and say hi, see how they make the Saori clothe products which very creative like a piece of arts and useful, you can support them by give them some sharity or buy these beautiful products in Japanese and Thai northern art styles to memorize your nice trip in Chiangmai or just sit or talk with them as a friend and then you can visit the anctient temple, art galleries and nice shops along the anctient street and riverbank nearby in this beautiful area… This private foundation was established by a father of an autistic son supported by Japanese government at first (gave them the looms to make Saori cloths and some designs), now there are many families in Chiangmai supported by this foundation. The manager of this foundation, the father still works for them and he is very cool old man with kindness and visions, you can visit and have a great conversation with him as well.
A non profit organisation with beautiful weaving creations created in-house. For really authentic ‘made in Chiang Mai work’ this is the place to go. The T shirts with woven elephant heads and tails are brilliant and the colourful Sakiori woven scarves are amazing. The workshop is the only outlet and they just love visitors.
