I took a 3 hour hill tribe weaving class at Thai Tribal Crafts Fair Trade and it was wonderful! I had an excellent woman and translator teach me to weave and I was able to take my section home with me. I learned so much about backstrap weaving, about local traditions, and had fun! They have the loom set up for you when you arrive and walk you through the experience with as much or as little help as needed. They also had snacks and drinks, which was lovely. I highly recommend this experience! Also – the store is AMAZING! I spent so much money here because all the items were beautiful. My favorite place for beautiful, handmade, quality textiles!
Very friendly staff, they were there and asked all of my questions with a smile! The manager, Elias was lovely, and organised a class for me for the next day (Friday) straight away – even though I arrived last minute, right before they closed the day before (Thursday).I had two different teachers while I did the class and they were both very smiley and helpful, showing me how to set up a loom, weave and make a traditional Karen pattern. They offered me water, tea and many different traditional snacks. Everyone was very informed and I really enjoyed my time there – would definitely visit again and I really recommend doing a workshop with them!
According to their brochure, ” Thai Tribal Crafts was established in 1973. The heart of the business was to improve the quality of life of the tribal people living in the mountain villages of northern Thailand by providing them with a vital and fair income.” There are seven different tribes making the handicrafts which are reflective of their culture. The sales clerk spoke fluent English and was very friendly. I would rather spend money here buying souvenirs while appreciating the talent and hard work of the hill tribe people. Highly recommend shopping here. It will warm your heart!
As a beginning weaver, I can’t recommend this class enough! I spent the whole morning learning how to set up the loom, then weaving my own piece in the afternoon. Numay and the weaving teacher were wonderful. They taught at my pace and continued to make sure I was comfortable throughout the day. The class included water, snacks, and coffee or tea and they took me to a fantastic hole in the wall Pad Thai joint for lunch.
I loved the crafts I had bought previously, so went out of my way to go there again and buy more crafts. It is a great way to assist the hill tribe people, and a win/win situation providing them with income and us with quality products.
今天我們到這裡織布,真的非常開心,且老師們很有耐心,即使我們英文不好。最後我們帶走了美麗的成品。謝謝Today we came here to weave, we were very happy, and the teachers were very patient, even if we didn’t speak English well. In the end we took away the beautiful finished product.
If you like authentic handmade textile items, come here. There is a good selection of very attractive handmade goods at very low prices. I got some handsome bargains, two handwoven scarves.
I come here to buy gifts for all occasions. They have good collection of table runners, tabke cloths, cushion covers, toilet bags, hammock, tote bags. It’s all handmade so quality is exceptional.
I had a wonderful time in a half-day weaving class. My instructor (one per student!) was patient and kind, showing me (over and over because I couldn’t get it right) how to use the loom. I have all kinds of new respect for the art of weaving, how much work goes into it, and how skilled the craftspeople are who made all the lovely things in the shop. Truly a good value for money, and proud to support hill tribe artisans fairly. I’m glad to be able to learn their skills and help keep the skills alive.
A really great shop, with good prices and beautiful handmade items. The shop offers products made by different village communities surrounding Chiang Mai. Each item has a label explaining which community it comes from, and what skills that community specialises in. Such a good place to buy presents for family and friends, while supporting local communities and/or female artists.
