As a fan of the culture it was a perfect introduction. They were kind and welcoming. They were patient with me and moved at my pace. Toei I believe has a PhD concerning these arts and she truly knows her stuff. She was able to explain everything perfectly. That too in English a second language. I cannot imagine the time and effort she puts into preparing for these lessons.I wish I had more time to do more activities with them. I will definitely be visiting again in the future. I would recommend them to anyone who goes to Chiangmai.
It’s a good experience.Thai traditional dance is interesting. And traditional Thai clothe is beautiful.
We loved our fruit and vegetables carving class and it was the highlight of our week here in Chiang Mi! We were welcomed by a very nice couple and we chatted all the way to the class. When we got there Toei and Sone made us some delicious Thai Sweets and a drink that changed color when you stirred lime juice in it. We started the class and Sone (the class instructor) was very helpful and so good with the kids. All the things we made were very creative and at the end we made watermelon baskets to give to the monks. It was so much fun and we loved it!
I have taken three classes throughout the month of October with Toei, the half-day vegetable and fruit carving opened my eyes to Thai carving, the soap carving and traditional Thai dance and music gave me a further taste of Thai culture, which I then decided to take one more class with Toei just focusing on traditional Thai music. Toei is a fantastic and patient teacher, her computer slides were informative, her teaching style was relaxed and yet focused on my progress step-by-step, and the desserts she prepared for me during each class was beyond delicious. Her husband Sone was a great photographer, he documented my learning progress in their studio, and provided door-to-door transportation to each class. Toei and Sone make the best Thai culture ambassadors I have met in Chiang Mai. I am looking forward to more classes with Toei when I return to Thailand next year, she opened a new door for me to appreciate Thai culture, or I should say several doors to glimpse the beauty of what Thailand has to offer to foreigners and the rest of the world.
Our family had a really wonderful time learning at the Wankaomai Cultural Workshop Studio. Toei is such a skilled teacher and infused the session with a great deal of information. We left with some skills, as well as a better understanding of the role of carving in Thai culture. We had such a fun afternoon. Additionally, Toei and her husband Sone are such gracious hosts–we were picked up at our hotel in the Old City and returned back to Chaing Mai at the end of the day.
This was one of my favorite international experiences ever. And as with most of life, the best memories aren’t necessarily about what you’re doing but who you do them with.Toei and Sone are incredibly kind and interesting hosts. Before we even met, I notified them that one of our family members was sick and they offered to help us get medicine for them. Toei has a graduate degree in Thai arts and has a wealth of information to share from the moment you get in the car. Sone is a veterinarian, a University of Michigan alumnus, experienced in marine life beach rescues, and will be more than happy to discuss native birdlife with you. They personally picked me up from my Airbnb and we had great discussions of local food, language, and customs. The road to their house is beautiful and flanked by trees wrapped in orange cloth for religious purposes. It’s beautiful, like Banyan Tree Road on the Big Island of Hawaii, and they even stopped the car for a minute so I could take pictures. They kindly welcomed me into their beautiful home, which is well air-conditioned, well-cared for, open, and bright.Toei showed me a brief PowerPoint with pictures and a history of Thai carvings, provided fresh and delicious dragonfruit, desserts, and tea. Then we made three soaps together, each with different methods. With my permission, Sone took photos throughout the session and shared 28 of them with me via e-mail afterwards which was a nice memento to have.I had a great experience and hope that I can see them again on a future visit to Thailand, perhaps either for fruit carving or one of their music/dance classes.
