A beautiful workshop from a beautiful artist. I had the privilege of having a 17 year veteran teach me the delicate art of soap carving. Going so far as to gift me an amazing bouquet carving.
it was the most awesome experience, a 3 hours class we made 10 soap roses. We both enjoy it very much and the teacher was very funny and professional with many years experience. It is easy to find and i highly recommended to anyone who is into art and carved some roses as gift to bring home. they provided boxes you can purchase too. Awesome
This review is written nearly 6 months on. The reason I write it now is because it was amazing. If you love handicrafts do this!I have been searching for something like this for so long as I have always admired the beautiful weaving work done by the different Hill Tribes but wasn’t sure where I could find to do this. On the day I arrived Nuch and Nalay looked after me so well. I don’t speak much Thai, Nuch has great English and Nalay is a little bit shy but you could see her confidence growing as the course went along. The funny thing is though how quickly you can bond and laugh and share your life with people not only through words but also actions. As I learnt to use the backstrap loom and weave (I have never done it before) there were many giggles as I pulled some interesting moves trying to understand. The girls are so talented it is so effortless to them. For me as the session went on it went from feeling like I had no idea to things starting to click and a beautiful piece of to fabric coming to life in front of me. I felt genuinely proud! I was so excited I bought a loom from the store to continue on my journey with this when I got home. (And knowing my new found enthusiasm probably didn’t match my skill level yet lol, I also bought some beautiful bags and table runners from the store to inspire me!).I really recommend this course. If you like handicrafts and want to experience some time with lovely Hill Tribe staff (Also Joyce and her husband who coordinate this who were so helpful to me!) take this course. There is something so relaxing about taking time out from modern technology to go back to basics and learn a skill that has lasted hundreds of years and been passed down generations. Nalay and Nuch… thank you so much beautiful girls! This will stay with me as a once in a lifetime experience! Having found this awesome place I made Papada and Aye come and see this new adventure and they were so impressed and a new Backstreet Academy friendship was formed. This is the beauty of Backstreet Academy, Papada and Aye are open to finding the best new experiences for tourists. As a lass that wanted to try weaving and managed after going on great temple lamp making tour and welding journeys with Papada and Aye had the confidence to identify a new outing for backstreet that I felt would match the standards and enthusiasm I had already experienced. I felt really proud. Papada, Aye, Nalay, Nuch – we are the example of the power of such a beautiful community as Backstreet Travellers!Backstreet opens a world of new adventures… and I am pleased to say the Hilltribe Weaving Course is one I was part of. It is great. Join up today!
Well organised with patient trainer and very supportive, fun translators. Recommend taking up the driver transfer option – local drivers may not be familiar with the location. And bring a steady hand!
Lovely experience adding a gold leaf design to a lacquerware box in a small workshop adjacent to the Nuch Lacquerware store. You can create your own design or use a template. Apple, my Backstreet guide, spoke good English and translated for the craftsperson/teacher. A fun and interesting cultural experience, complete with personal souvenir.
We loved our time with Aik and Nok. They were so professional and friendly and made the day one of our best and most memorable in Chiang Mai. They were super organized and patient, even with me, a very awkward and clumsy cook. The food was delicious. And the pick up and drop off service directly from our hotel was so convenient and easy. I highly recommend this experience with Arom Dii.
Just an amazing day, thank you Mr. Chai Song for showing me your excellent craftsmanship skills in constructing traditional crossbows. The perfect introduction into the Hmong culture an adventure well worth the time spent. This entire workshop went as planned. The pickup from the hotel was spot on and Keo was a wonderful host full of information and a great translator – thanks Keo and thanks to Backstreet Academy.February 01, 2018Sean
My partner and I had a fantastic time learning about glass sculpting here. We were able to have a go ourselves and made little glass pigs to take home. The instructor was very patient with us and the interpreter was absolutely lovely. The actual place was a little bit tricky to get to(suburban house) so I would recommend the pickup option I see others talking about. There are also many beautiful glass items on display and to buy at the location. All in all a great experience to have while visiting Chang Mai!
I booked a two day course at the Suranat Leather studio in Chiang Mai for my partner as a Christmas gift. After numerous emails it transpired that the US$25.00 I paid upfront was a ‘booking fee’ to some unknown person……. NOTHING to do with the cost of the workshop. So overall the workshop cost me (on today’s rates) US$148.00…… AND I am in no way complaining about that…….BUT buyer beware. He enjoyed the workshop, learnt heaps and was happy, but the whole money side of it did put a dampener on it for me.The teacher is obviously a craftsman in his own field and a patient teacher.
A great morning class. Noy is very knowledgable & a master craftsman. Passionate about His craft & very willing to pass on his knowledge even if we find it hard to copy. We made glass elephants, a little harder than the pigs but still doable in the time with a lot of help from Noy. If time permits this is a very enjoyable mornings activity. Highly recommended.
