Tan Trekking is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
Tan and his partber San are nice people, but the Salakpet trek was very disappointing. He changed the path and we had to walk up more than 700m up in a dangerous, steep, never ending trail. And his attitude was the worse. First he said that maybe we wouldn’t have time to go to the waterfall that was in the advertisement, which was very dishonest since the reason why I chose this track was the waterfall. Then he got impatient with the ones in the huge group of more than 15 people that couldn’t keep the pace in such difficult conditions. One guy hurt himself in a spiky tree and Tan censured the group telling us that we had to be careful instead of giving him proper care. Tan was always meters ahead leaving many behind in a umbelievable careless treatment to his clients. We had almost no breaks, and no more than 15 minutes at the small viewpoint at the top of the mountain. We didn’t go to the waterfall and he tried to compensate taking us to a waterhole, where we also stayed for less than 15 min. And it was eight hours walking. Everybody were exausted and grumpy at the end. I don’t recomment him at all.
Just go for it. It’s quite a steep walk, but you won’t regret it. The guide is super nice and knows everything about the jungle you will walk in. And YES, that is the jungle I’ve been searching for years. Untouched and beautiful. I took the „medium“ trekk option. You start at a fruit farm. Tan tells you everything you need to know about the fruits on Koh Chang. Then you will walk right into the jungle. After a walk of 2-3 hours through the jungle you will get to a waterfall. There are nice, small pools in which you can refresh and have a nice lunch made by Tan himself. From there on you will have many different kinds of butterfly’s surround you on the path out of the jungle. It was an amazing experience and with every bath.
We were able to rent an American Jeep from Tan Trekking. Khun Tan & his lovely wife Nancy rented the jeep for a discounted rate. You either need to leave your original passport or 10000 bahts as a security deposit with them. Their office is very close to the Ferry KoChang Pier (Ao Sapparot Pier) so they dropped us to the pier when we returned the car. Best decision we ever made as the songtaews are running very infrequently due to lack of tourists & proves to be very expensive especially when you want to visit further parts of the island. Khun Tan has collected these jeeps from all over Thailand…mostly American vintage jeeps and he takes you around for a 15 minute ride to get used to the tricky roads & gears…let’s just say that was very helpful especially when you’re going through the windy loopy roads to Lonely Beach.Attaching a picture with his contact details & the Jeep we rented.Jungle Trekking: This definitely was no walk in the park. It was more like a Tarzan & Jane kind of day swinging from vines & going over/under fallen trees & abseiling while trekking upto the icy cold waterfalls in 5 hours all in the company of Khun Tan who paved his own trekking route & has been trekking the KoChang forests for 15 years. Please wear long sleeved tops, light full length trousers as the mozzies are larger than life & quite immune to repellant. A must to wear sturdy walking shoes as the rocks near the waterfall are very slippery. Khun Tan will give you a live lesson on the Thailand fauna & animals. …very fascinating. My 1st time to see Wood Mushrooms?Khun Tan & Nancy are a lovely couple & ready to help… highly recommend them
This is a tough day out and not for the unfit but definitely worth the sweat. Khun Tan really knows his stuff about the nature around you and his commitment is clear (he cut many of the trails himself over the years). Stunning views at the summit and a cool swim in the river at the bottom top and tail this very nicely.
I spent a really good time! Tan is the best! I joined the klong prao trek. The difficulty was perfect. I’m frequently hiking but it was not so easy! Still a good challenge. The food was amazing! Thanks Nancy! Tan have a real knowledge of the jungle and really funny man! I will come back for sure!!
Tan is very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the jungle and eco system. We did the Tan Trekking to Klong Prao which was a decent trek up hill with some great views followed by a cooling dip in the river. The waterfall was low at this time of year but still a very pleasant experience.
On 20-Feb-2023 we took a Jungle trek with Tan. He was frustrated and rude throughout the trek.At one time, he lost control, came to my wife who was sitting 20 meters away from him and started insulting & shouting at her, for allegedly “staring at him all the time”.At the end of the trek, I asked him to apologize to my wife, and he refused and started shouting again. All 10 group members can verify this. His license should be revoked.
Many thanks to Tan. It was such a great day with him. Tan has more than 20 years experience as a guide, enormous knowledge of all the interesting plants and animals, and an extremely friendly nature. We also would like to mention his wife Nancy. With her we were planning our hike and she is also the cook for the beautiful lunch at the river.
We have joined Tan’s extraordinary itineneary. I must admit it was one of my best tracking experiences of my life. Tan’s personality and extensive knowledge was a great input. This is an abolute must to all Koh Chang goers!
This was a steep hike in dense jungle, quite challenging. Tan was a fantastic guide, really knowledgeable and I learned some interesting facts about insects and plant life. Once up to the first summit the views were spectacular, both sides of the Island were visible. Coming down we clung to rope at times as it was steep and slippery under foot. The swim in the waterfall at the end was amazing
