Our family loved visiting Maewang Elephant Care. The staff are all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and seem to enjoy sharing their understanding of the eight wonderful elephants in their care. We fed the elephants, went on a foraging walk with them and then went with them to wash and play in the river. Each of them from Papa Joe (59) to a two year old baby had their own character which the staff helped us get a sense of. Our main guide was a charismatic man whose nickname was Mr Big. He taught us loads about the elephants and really seemed to enjoy sharing our excitement to meet them. The ethics of the place seem superb; no rides, because it hurts the animals’ backs, and everything seemed very focused on their welfare. We loved the peace, happiness and positivity of the whole experience.
Need to get to the Mekong for the slow boat to Luang Prabang and don’t want to ride an elephant – Joey Man’s the contact! A good driver in a modern vehicle, he’ll get you there safe and sound and refreshed. He speaks very good English and he knows the area, the secret spots, so you’ll have an enjoyable and entertaining journey.
My husband and I visited Chiang Mai on Dec 2019 and had a really positive experience. We enjoyed a full day of visiting a temple, hiking, walking through the rice fields, and visiting the Karen Hill tribe elephant sanctuary, which was amazing! Super friendly staff, very knowledgeable, overall a great experience! One of my favorite days in Thailand 🙂
