We signed up for a 6 day mahout course on the strong recommendation of previous guests whom we met. We were picked up at our lodging in Chiang Mai and taken to the attractive lodge in the countryside about an hour away. Our trainer, Diti, explained that we would go to the camp after lunch and meet the elephants, then the next day have some training and go for our first ride. The camp has a lovely waterfall and pool in which the animals are bathed, plus some rustic structures which blend with the surroundings. We were also taken in a vehicle on alternate days to several other places, including a small village where we were invited into a classroom and greeted warmly by the small students. All excursions were well planned and interesting, and the temple and forest were quite unique. The elephants were gentle, happy and relaxed, which attests to the excellent care given them by the staff. We were encouraged to bond with our animals and it was difficult to say goodbye at the end. Meals were excellent, all staff very accommodating, and the facilities very nice. If you want more than just a ride in a basket, sign up for a few days or a longer trek. You will be professionally coached to control the elephant but staff will always be at hand if help is needed. Elephant Special Tours has many return guests, and we hope to be among them in the future.
really you need go at the one day tour, the best tour include kwai bridge, cementery and elephant tour day, with river. nice ! enjoy the day !!
This was an experience that our family will never forget! We learned a lot about the elephants and their habitat. Our kids were all able to ride their own elephant and their favourite experience of the tour was bathing with the elephants! If you want to do something with the family that you won’t ever forget then I would recommend this tour.
Best time I had in all of Thailand. A very knowledgeable and funny tourguide called Hans speaks fluent english, so no problems for not german speaking people. Everything is well organised: pick up on time, very nice and clean guesthouse with friendly staff and you are taken care of 24/7. Not only is the elefant riding an experience of a lifteime, Elephant Special Tours is fighting to make the life of elephants in thailand more pleasent. Check out their foundation! All in all just a perfect trip!
My 3 day elephant education trip with the “Elephant Special Tours” was without question the best unforgivable experience of my life. When I look back to these three days … it gives me creeps and a big bright smile in my face. I don´t like to tell you what I’ve done in this three days … but all in one … it was a great experience, fun and just amazing. Oh yes, I was searching a long time at the internet to find an elephant center what I was looking for. For me it was very important that they treat the elephant very well and keep their animals under species-appropriate living conditions according to the current state of knowledge in order to foster animal welfare. There are quite a lot companies around who offer this cheap one hour elephant riding or washing trips. Of course you can earn with these “shows” much money … but do they invest this in the elephants and take really care about them?!!Anyway, the elephant special tours were the right choice. From the first contact for booking, the pick up from the hotel, the fantastic accommodation (MaeWang Guesthouse), the loving care and drop of in your hotel …. all in one perfect and well organized. I got in this education trip so much more than I expected. I have not only learned a lot about the elephants, I got also some useful information’s about their wonderful concept and an introduction in the culture/local life around. And while I´m writing about this … my emotions running high from the time with these gentle giants. Never will I forget the first contact with my elephant “Chum Chang” when he was laying his trunk around me. If you are looking for a company who do protect the last elephants und spend nearly every cent in these … do not look further. Of course … they seem not the cheapest on the market … but you will quickly understand why and learn about this big challenge to safe our last giants. Be a part of their great concept and do a tour with them. Thank you so much Roger & the rest of the team which offered me these incredible experiences. It will forever touch my heart.
The camp and the people are just great. The accommodation is perfect, food and service too. They way the elephants get treated with great respect is wonderful. I learned so much about elephants and riding and swimming with them was an experience I will never forget. I had a outstanding time and would really like to go back.
Before this three-day trip, I had had little to do with horses, let alone elephants. Thanks to Roger and his team of mahouts, I rapidly got used to being around these impressive animals and enjoyed riding “my own” Elephant, Mae Goeg I, for this period. My boys (4 and 6) also quickly overcome their reluctance and rode themselves (each one accompanied by a mahout), having lots of fun. My wife also appreciated the variety of the programme : small trips in the neighbourhood showed us a bit of the local life, i.e. a Karen village, an agricultural programme, a kindergarten.
It was an unforgettable experience. Especially for my friend Johanna who was so close to the elephant and fell in love with the elephant. We talked about it a lot and even today it is deeply embedded in our hearts. The local people who took care of everything were just perfect. You could always ask and everything was always readily explained, even if it was asked several times in advance. This flood of information had to be sorted out first.
We absolutely LOVED our 3 day tour. We were able to get to know our elephants and bond with them. It was so amazing how we could tell them apart so soon and get to know their personalities. Bodo’s vision for the future of Elephants for the next generations is well thought out and incredible. So thankful that we were able to be a part of his vision for a few days. We already miss “our elephants”.
It was a mega experience. A day with elephants, In the great outdoors (Not in the enclosure etc.) We were picked up in the morning and received by guide friendly.Since the guide came from Hamburg, he knew German of course. Then we could visit the camp. Questions we had were explained in a very understandable way. Then we sat among the elephants as they got their 2nd breakfast, an experience indescribable. Afterwards we went out into nature with the thick skins, for hiking. So close to experience the elephants fantastic. We didn’t want mass tourism, Where the jumbos bathed 3 times a day etc, We wanted to experience authentic elephants, went especially for it to Chiang Mai to Bodo Forester. And that’s exactly what we got to experience here. Thank you Thank you
We didn’t want a typical tourist trap, so we decided to take a day trip to Bodo – and that was the best decision! Getting to know the elephants was an awesome moment – sitting on the ground in front of these majestic animals was simply unforgettable. We were allowed to feed them, walk through the river with them and even bathe them, which made the connection with the animals even more intense. It was especially nice that we were traveling in a small group (just the four of us). A big thank you to Julia, Luca, Anna and the Mahouts who accompanied us with their kindness and knowledge. This tour is highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience elephants sustainably and authentically!
