This course was highly recommended to us by some friends where despite us being slightly apprehensive as it didn’t appear in the lonely planet travel guide, this truly was one of the highlights of our stay in Chiang Mai. The guys were so helpful – they talked us through the preparation and uses many of the different spices, different kinds of rice and different herbs when we went to the market to get our supplies for cooking later on. The class was held at the chef’s family house which had a friendly atmosphere and was away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We were guided throughout our cooking whenever we needed the help. It was a bonus that both the guys spoke in fluent English. For a cooking novice, I was surprised to when it came to tasting my food as I was expecting to have over/undercooked or added too much or too little of an ingredient when in actual fact it was some of the tastiest food I had eaten in Thailand. I’d definitely do this course again, however if you go at night don’t forget your mosquito spray like we did! We were bitten half to death!
Attended with my 12 & 11 year old and l 3 of us had a great time. Taught 9 dishes plus carvings, taken on market visit and given recipe book. This is a new school but highly recommended.
We stayed in Chiang Mai for 6 nights and were really busy so we didn’t book everything as well as we wanted. At the end of our time in Chiang Mai, we still hadn’t booked a cooking class (which is something we really wanted to do) so we asked our hotel tour guide agent to get us a cooking class for that evening. He called and arranged the class and we were picked up from our hotel at the time they said they would come. We went to their family home outside of Chiang Mai where we decided on what menu we wanted to make. We decided to make three dishes and then learn how to carve vegetables into flowers as our fourth choice. Once our decision was made, we went to the local market to buy the ingredients and Marut and his brother explained the different types of Thai herbs, vegetables, and curries. We felt very relaxed and learned quite a few new things while at the market. Once we were back at the house, we cooked our dishes one at a time and ate them as they were ready. The portions were single size but with three dishes to eat, it was more than enough food. The food was not only delicious but Marut made sure that we sampled each dish before we ate it to make sure it was salty or sweet enough. We had such a good time with Marut and his brother. They are great teachers and were very encouraging. They have a positive attitude and they enjoyed joking around with us. It was a once in a lifetime experience to learn how to cook thai dishes in Thailand and we really appreciated the personal touch that they delivered. I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants to take a cooking class in Chiang Mai!! The cost was very low considering all the food you eat and how much you learn from the experience. And we will use the recipe cook book that we were given at the end of the class. A+
My kids aged 12 & 11 and I thoroughly enjoyed this class. We were taught 9 recipes and carvings, visited a local market given a recipe book and had a lot to eat. Perfect afternoon.
Today my boyfriend and I went to this cooking class and we had such a great time! Not only did we learn a lot about Thai cuisine and ingredients but it was also nice to have such friendly and enthousiastic people around. We really enjoyed going to the local market and learning how to cook our favourite dishes. It was delicious…. They also offered us a free round trip from our hotel in Chiang Mai and back and afterwards we received a very nice book with all the recipes. We can’t wait to show-off our new cooking skills at home! It was a great local experience and we would recommend it to everyone.
It was just me and my partner booked on the course for the evening which made it more personal and we were able to ask all the questions we wanted. However I can see the benefit of having a bigger group for more of an atmosphere. We felt very at home instantly at arms place who is a very friendly and knowledgable teacher. It was well worth the money we paid for a great evening and the food we made was delicious!!! You also get a welcome drink and nibbles to get your taste buds going. We were glad to receive the recipe book at the end so we can carry on eating the thai food that we love when returning home.
Had a great and very enjoyable night. Chef ‘Arm’ was great! Loved the trip to the local market and the personalized cook books that he gave us at the end of the class.
Love the cozy place and interesting to see all the plants grown in his back yard (lemongrass, basil, etc etc). Arm is super chill and easy going! We each got to pick 4 dishes and love the personal attention. He even gave us a free banana with coconut milk desert at the end. The welcome drink and welcome snack also nice. Oh, don’t forget to get his autograph for his cookbook, hehe.
We attended a cooking class in October 2013 and this was one of the best experiences I had during our week in Thailand. We were staying in Mae Rim (about a 45 minute drive from the class) so Arm organised a transfer for us to and from the class for a very reasonable price (transfers within a 10km radius of the class are free) and also organised for the driver to stop at a 7-eleven on our way back to the hotel so we could buy some snacks and drinks.Arm was fantastic – friendly, professional and really passionate about what he does. He showed us around the local market and talked through all the different ingredients used in Thai cooking. He also let us have some free time to look around the market, which was a great insight into Thai life. Back at the class we had refreshments (some lovely herbal iced tea) and a traditional Thai snack, where there are a variety of ingredients that you wrap in a leaf, dip in some yummy sauce and eat – very nice!We were able to choose 2 categories of dishes to cook from Appetizers, Soups, Curries, Main Courses, Desserts and Fruit Carving. From those categories we could then each select one to cook from a number of dishes. I chose Thai Fish Cakes, Kao-Soi and Pad Thai, while hubby chose Chicken Weaving (minced chicken balls wrapped in noodles and deep fried), Massaman Curry and Chicken with Cashew Nuts. We also opted for the fruit carving. Cooking the dishes was heaps of fun, especially with the expert instruction of Arm. We were able to taste the dishes before they were served so that we could add seasonings to suit our taste, which I thought was great. The fruit carving was tricky but heaps of fun and Arm was on hand to help out whenever we needed. After the cooking we sat down and enjoyed the food, which was absolutely delicious and plentiful! We were given a great little cookbook with all the recipes to that we can recreate them at home as well. We both had an absolutely fantastic day and I would encourage anyone visitng Chiang Mai to go to a cooking class at iDID as you will have a great time and help to support your hard-working, passionate and friendly host, Arm, to grow his business and share his great skills. Thanks so much to Arm for such a great experience!
It was really tasty experience. I learned a lot about ingreients, and all the thai quisine basis. We spent couple of hours on evening cooking, there was no market tour. The amount of food we have prepared was enough for 4 people not 2, and it wa not possible to eat everything.
