  1. Super little museum that looks into the proud culture of all the many hill tribes around Thailand. Fascinating stuff, thanks

  2. As a tribal person myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the similarities and variety of Thailand’s Hill Tribes. I felt so connected to them in many ways. Its so amazing to see the intricate work they do with their hands. And to see families and traditions acted out in community. They present a short movie and then you can tour on your own or have help from a guide. The exhibits are well done. Outside, they have a set of villages you can walk through. This is a great first step if you plan to visit the Hmong or other tribes up on the mountains.

  3. Left the hotel 8.30am, stood on street a songthaew stopped. Nice guy we had Nancy Chandler map(fab) showed him where we wanted to go. Interesting ride to museum. Lovely peaceful area. He said he would wait for us. Walked through the mock village huts quite interesting. Onto road with food etc overlooking lake. Museum building really nice. Staff so nice and helpful. Watched the 15 minute video. This was excellent really well done good photography. Then went upstairs. It was truly amazing , if you are interested in the history and culture of these amazing people. The exhibition was well put together. We spent an enjoyable three hours in and around this tranquil area. We then got our driver to take us to the Huey Tuen Lake for couple hours – all for 800 bht. Delightful, money well spent.

  4. Small museum in a park. We went there on a rainy day. We watched a 15 min video about different mountain tribes which was informative.

  5. Oh my goodness, the staff are absolutely delightful. I’d have loved to have bought a delicious blue blouse made by a tribeswoman, but there was no room in my wee suitcase for anything more. We walked here from Nimman, thoroughly enjoyed it. Free entry but a tip very welcome. Museum info good, 15 min video when you arrive was very informative (quality not great but you get the gist). Rest of the displays good, we’ve seen a lot of similar info in Chiang Rai and the cultural museum in Chiang Mai. Many of the individual videos weren’t working and some seating wouldn’t go astray. The village house examples outside would’ve been great when first built, but are no longer maintained. Unfortunately. Would’ve been good otherwise, particularly for children. Now they’re just rundown and sad. Wouldn’t recommend museum for small children – wouldn’t be a good outcome! Lovely little gift shop. If you buy that blue blouse, I’m smitten with envy.

  6. I took a red truck there and because it’s a off the beaten track, I had the driver wait for me while I toured the museum and I spent time in the gift shop. It cost about 400 baht which I thought was very reasonable.I bought a beautiful handmade little basket with a handle made by a member of the Hmong people. It’s so incredibly well-made.On the way, a short distance from the museum, we passed what looked like a tribal village set up with thatched roofs and bamboo poles with some tables and chairs underneath. I would like to been able to stop there but it wasn’t in my plans and I didn’t want to just drop in as a tourist. I would have awkward taking photos of them. The museum itself is very humble and plain but it contains a wealth of information. The exhibits include valuable write ups for tourists. I spent a lot of time looking at things and expanding my knowledge about the many diverse tribes in Thailand. It’s very fascinating as many of them come from many of the surrounding mountains in neighbouring countries and they still live in a traditional way. Sadly, the changes in their lives are happening quickly. When I was on a tour last week, I saw firsthand the Women of the long necked Hill tribe and how they have to sell things in order to survive. I highly recommend this museum as a Destiination on your trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand.

  7. Wonderful find. This museum in a serene setting on the outskirts of ChiangMai, is perfect for learning about the various hill tribes that have migrated from China, Laos and Burma a long time ago. Each tribe had a setting with examples of clothing, rituals, and utensils well described in English too as well as a short video. The gift shop was amazing with handwork by the various tribes women. Prices were very reasonable. We hired a driver to get there and wait, as well as take us to Baan Tong Luang Outdoor Living Museum. Total for driver was 150 B and was arranged by our hotel.

  8. We had a good 90 minutes here, very informative. I love the way they present their clothing and jewellery. The exhibition had a lot of videos explaining the tribes’ history, traditions and culture so that it was easy to get the important stuff. The clothes are amazing We used grab taxi which was about 100 bhat.

  9. I wondered why this place wasn’t packed, the exhibition is so comprehensive, informative, interesting and for me, quite nostalgic. I’m so lucky to have visited and stayed in an authentic hill tribe village 43 years ago before any of current civilisation integrated to make the tribes what they are today, so I recognised a lot of the early history.Obviously it’s better now because they grow food crops, not just opium. They now have infrastructure, transport, education and modern appliances. None of that existed all those decades ago until the former King and Queen implemented programs to make a better way of life for the hill tribe people. All of this is explained in wonderful detail in early film footage.I’m sad that I know longer have all the original jewellery and clothing that I bought all those years ago, it’s all in the museum now. Showing my age!Don’t miss one of the best exhibitions in Thailand. You’ll easily spend a couple of hours watching video presentations, looking at all the different clothing and artifacts (and appreciating the air-conditioning).There’s no entry fee, only a voluntary donation system if you want to contribute. It’s well worth it.

  10. Quirky museum that tells you everything you want to know about the hill tribes! Well organized, friendly staff, nice gift shop. A great introduction to the tribes, especially if you will be visiting a tribal village afterwards. Highly recommended!
