This was an amazing way to get to know the secrets of the thai cuisine. We made a short trip to the market and went straight to the cooking school from there. Everyone had a stove, wok and ready prepared ingredients to make 6-8 dishes. 4 were for lunch and the other ones for take away dinner. We had curries, soup, stir fry, fish cake and many more. You get a cookbook and with this you’ll work. You’ll also get explained what you can use as substitutes for stuff you don’t get at home. One thing is made clear – cooking has to be experienced. Your dish is done when it looks and smells good – no time indicator! It works! “Cook until look good!” A great day in a lovely semi-open-air kitchen
We had a very good time with Jo, the Thai chef :)WHAT WE LIKED- Jo is very friendly and funny – He explained us well the Thai cuisine: ingredients, how to mix them and technics. – We cooked 8 dishes. 5 for the lunch and 3 for the dinner. They were all very different: deep fried, curry, soup, sauce, stir fried, cooked with steam, sweat, sour, spicy and salty. – He focused the teaching on the interesting part: the technics. Everything was already cut so we did not spend ages cutting all ingredients. – In the morning the chef took us to the market and we could ask him some explanations about unknown food. – Very good English (previously lived in Australia) – Good value!
What a great way to spend a day! The teacher is good, easy to follow his instructions. Location is nice and we had a small group of only 7 people. We got to eat everything we made for lunch and after that we made some more to take home for dinner. You get a cookbook at the beginning so you can write down your own notes and try again when back home.
Jo, our chef, was fun. He took us to the market where he showed us some ingredients. Back to the house, he made us taste some and taught us how to cut them for thai food. Don’t worry about not finding some ingredients un your country, he will give you some alternatives. We cooked our lunch AND diner and we also had a recipe book. I also liked the fact that we were a small group (4). I only wished we could have practiced more but considering all the cutting involved for one dish, it would have taken ages!
Lots of thai classics cooked and definitely more food than one could eat including take homeInstruction was educational and entertainingThe kitchen/instructor wasn’t really setup for gluten free, which both of us were but did their best to accommodate. Many of the dishes had been prepped with soy sauce which was a problem. Did their best to accommodate.Definitely learned thai classic dishes which was great.A tad pricey at 900 baht per person
The LP recommended gaps school of culinary art for cooking lesson in Chiang mai. We walked to gaps house in Chiang mai to book 900baht each and well worth it. A group of six of us worked with Joe from 9:30-3pm and made the most delicious food (we couldn’t believe WE were capable of making such amazing dishes!). Joe is very funny, friendly and really enthusiastic in his teaching. The student to teacher ratio is great, he can show you how to do things as he is close by all the time. You get a cook book with all the recipes (and extras!). This was a great day out in Chiang mai. Highly recommend. Thanks Joe!
Had a seriously good time with Joe yesterday. Just three of us in the class so instruction was very hands on.He takes you to a very Thai (read no Tourists) market first thing to wander around. Then you arrive at the boss’s house with a nice outdoor cooking set up.We made 5 courses for our lunch in the AM. Then 3 take away courses in the PM.You don’t chop your own ingredients, its all very organized and comes to you in little bowls. But i actually liked this. More time cooling and eating, less time prepping.Again, Joe is the man!
Maybe in the past the school was good but it’s over !!!! First he let us 15 min alone on the market asking us to take pictures to ask later if we have questions: why later…useless. Me and my friend really got the impression that this school maintains a few courses but that it is no longer really a school ! The guy was not professional at all. We sat in front of the professor who often looked at his phone, he made us turn the pages of the recipe book to list the ingredients while someone drops them all already cut in one plate, ready to be cooked. Sometimes even it was already baking without us doing anything (the dessert was done without us). We really have learned nothing, no added value of the teacher who spends his time laughing stupidly. The only thing we did was cook sometimes the food while he was smoking his cigarette by repeating “Cook Cook Cook”. He was absent to call his daughter, to look at his phone pictures. A woman showed us how to cook the rice while she was on the phone. We were very uncomfortable. It lasted from 10h45 to 14h (including lunch). So so so disappointing 🙁
There were just five us learning how to make a huge selection of dishes with Joe, a retired chef and our teacher for the day. Joe was hilarious and made sure that we all had a great time. The full day class involved a quick trip around the market and encouraged us to ask questions about unfamiliar looking produce. After that we spent the rest of the day cooking – all ingredients were already chopped and prepared for us so that we could focus on finding the right spice/sour/salty level for our own taste etc.We were given a cotton bag a huge a4 cook book as part of the package, to take home with us.We made so much food in a day long course that we had food to take home with us – I was still full so ended up sharing this with friends at my hostel. Seemed to go down well!Highly recommended.
Joe is a veteran chef with great sense of humour and fun! I am the only student on that day and yet he still teaches with full attention. Besides cooking 7-8 dishes, *importantly* he uses Fresh coconut milk in the school. The school gaves a big lovely cotton bag and a thick cookbook to take home.Teacher Joe also teaches me to crave Tomato and Onion ! This is worth learning.I have attended a top 10 listed based on Trip Advisor’s review before Gap but I am not impressed at all. That school is suing box coconut milk, just some copies of recipes & a certificate.
