I have lived In Mae Taeng some 20 years and have visited Mae Ta Man over the years. great setting an river. the elephant ride about 800 baht is a bit dear, but they do take you across the river and into the jungle. there is a tourist show of elephant talents lifting tree trunks and playing football. many tourist items and riding carts………….if you just want to ride and walk around goo early before all the tourist buses come
We selected ELE based on a friend’s recommendation. We arranged the trip through a local event/adventure guide due to not being able to contact ELE directly. At the time, we were told they do not book directly with tourists. I am not sure if this is still the case. Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly, super accommodating staff who provided us with our uniforms. We sat for a minute and had refreshments while the staff went over all of the necessities. We were then introduced to two elephants and got to feed the, and have a photo opportunity. Due to this being a private facility and that we only had two people in our group, the staff completely catered to us. We were provided with snacks and refreshments through out the day. The catered lunch was superb (I believe it was from the Four Seasons, but I could be wrong). We were able to paint with the elephants, go for individual rides as well as a joint ride with a mahout guide and we “bathed” the elephants in the river. The staff was very attentave and allowed us opportunities to do everything without feeling rushed. Their attitude was very, “this is your day, what can we do?” We were completely blown away by the whole experience, which was very intimate and was truly a five star experience. At the end of the day we took a raft ride down the river. Along the ride we saw several other elephant camps with lines of tourist waiting to interact with the elephants. ELE was much pricier than other camps but ELE was the specific reason we went to Chiang Mai. I recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Elephant tour but knew we were in for a great day as soon as we got there and were greeted by a wonderful attentive staff and 2 beautiful 4 and 6 year old elephants. The day was extremely organized from start to finish and we were able to do so many different activities w the elephants. Best part of it was that it was PRIVATE. Elephants and us. The staff also let us know so much information about these animals as well. I advise anyone going to pay the extra money and go private, it’s worth it. We spoke w friends who have done tours and they are astounded by everything we did in ours. We even have our 2 paintings done by elephants in our bag ready to take home!
From start to finish this experience was amazing. We were met by two elephants which we fed. Then changed into mahout costumes and learned more about the elephants. We were not planning to ride them as many of the elephants are treated cruelly in these parks but here they gave humane practices so we rode them briefly bareback. Then our 3 year old painted with an elephant. It was a sight to behold. We all then rode one big elephant on a bench seat. Washed them, had lunch and rafted down the river. We didn’t stop smiling or laughing from start to finish. The people who run the place were wonderful and so focused on us having a good time. We organised our own transfers via Tai from Amazing Asia Tours at a third of the price of a local taxi / 6th of the price of the hotel. The car was brand new, driver great and it turns out she could have organised the whole experience for us. Highly recommend using her [email protected]
This camp exceeded all expectations. We should up and were a bit nervous because we’re both (i think) very sensitive to animal abuse. We had the camp to ourselves (just two of us) for the whole afternoon. Any animal that they exercise in the morning show (also private) they will not work in the afternoon. We learned a lot, swam, bathed, painted and “dined” with the elephants. It was unreal. They had a photographer on site to take pictures of us so we didn’t have to worry about capturing the moment for future reference–we could just enjoy. Anyone that goes to Chiang Mai and wants to see elephants should go to E.L.E–it’s expensive but absolutely unbelievable and intimate.
This is a private experience with a small group of about 7 domesticated elephants. The staff is friendly and accommodating and the elephants are simply incredible. However, I was upset about the treatment of the elephants. I had done research before the trip and noted that one should stay clear of elephant experiences that allow riding, particularly with a trekking chair on their backs which can be very harmful to the elephant. Nowhere on the website for Elephant Life Experience does it say that riding is included, which led me to believe this was a more humane encounter with elephants. But when we were informed of the plan for the day, sure enough we were offered both bareback riding (on the neck) and trekking on the chair (both of which we turned down). Moreover, the two younger “teenager” elephants had chains in their feet which looked very uncomfortable/painful, and the mahouts (their minders) carried bull hooks which seemed potentially cruel. As a lifelong equestrian, I understand that large animals can be dangerous and difficult to control/train. However, i was heartbroken that this program opted to provide “crowd pleasers” such as riding and elephant painting that “require” potentially cruel training methods – I would have much preferred to visit a sanctuary that allows visitors to interact with elephants more naturally and ethically. I will admit that Elephant Life Experience seems more humane than neighboring elephant camps we saw which allow multiple people on each elephant’s back and work the elephants continuously throughout the day. On the contrary, these elephants do seem well fed, cared for and not overworked. Nevertheless, in spite of the “exclusivity” of the program, I would have preferred an experience where I knew that these incredible beings were not being exploited.
The most amazing day ever bare back riding elephants washing them in the river and a four seasons lunch all in private with showers after a soaking with the elephants in the river! Finished with a raft ride in luxury back to your transfer. Highly recommended.
Life-changing experience… but I didn’t like some of the things I saw. First was the chains around some of the elephants – it’s clear that they use chains at night, or something. Why not take them off when they see guests, at a minimum? I didn’t expect that. They say that they’re for the babies, but I saw them around the necks of the older elephants, too. #2 was that they clearly sleep in closed quarters, and don’t roam free. This isn’t an elephant sanctuary, so don’t expect that. #3 is they offer basket riding for multiple riders (vs. juts bare back), which is known to be worse for the elephants. #4 is they have the elephants paint pictures for you, which is much harder to train – meaning it requires tougher tactics. I didn’t like that either – felt very unnatural. And lastly, the mahouts use sharp tools to get the elephants in place – I saw this first hand and hated seeing them use it to put pressure on the elephants to move into place. Didn’t see anything too tragic at all, or would have left, but I saw enough to make me the slightest bit uncomfortable and write this review. Overall, it was honestly an incredible experience given how up close and personal you get to be with these amazing creatures. However, if you’re sensitive to this type of stuff, there are better elephant experiences (the sanctuaries etc.) for you. The last thing I’d say is that this was NOT NEARLY as bad as it gets – there are FAR worse camps… but the point is if that you’re at all sensitive to it, this still isn’t for you. Outside of that, the service and experience is absolutely incredible.
We were a group of 10 so obviously this was an expensive affair but we didn’t regret this for a moment. If you want to experience elephants in this part of Thailand then this program is just a must. You are treated like royalty, given the traditional ‘mahout outfits’ and can enjoy the full scope of activities with several elephants while having the entire camp exclusively for your group.
The ‘ELE’ was truly a life changing experience. I don’t want to give the experience away. Just know the care takers love these elephants. And we had the best experience with the staff and elephants. I highly recommend Elephant Life Experience!
