  1. We chose Good Morning Thailand Tours after looking for a local ethical trekking organizer. Ann and her father took us on a great 2 day trek in the Mae Hoe Song area walking along rice-paddies in the jungle and to view-points. The group was great and Ann often stopped for explanations. The trek was varied and just as difficult as what we had asked for (would never have found it ourselves). The homestay was just as authentic as is was simple. We had a great time participating in preparing the meal around the fireplace. Next day we had breakfast with omelet cooked in bamboo. We could hear the gibbons, but not see them. The had a refreshing shower at the waterfall before heading back to Chiang Mai. We had no disappointments and felt great dealing with Ann who is also a partner in the company.

  2. If you are looking for an authentic experience of the Karen hill tribes combined with a challenging trek away from tourists – look no further! I went solo in a group of 6 people, for the 2 day trek/ overnight stay. On day 1 the group split halfway as there was one easier route (for the family with kid) and one more challenging route that we took. We then regrouped at the village where we stayed overnight. The journey was about a 6 hour trek on the first day with breaks and a 3 hour trek on the second. The people in the village were very accommodating and you got a great insight into their lives. Our wonderful guide Anne made sure that we integrated well and were able to ask/ translate any questions that we had. She herself is from a nearby village so you get a lot of insider knowledge from her. On our hike she told us all about the plants in the jungle, showed us jungle “party tricks”, and told us about the animals that live there. During the 2 days we were well cared for with lunch packages, dinner, and breakfast. The only thing I’d say is don’t come in with expectations of getting a great night sleep – this is a real jungle experience, there are dogs barking in the night, there’s smoke from the fire place, and going to the toilet at night requires a torch and climbing down a ladder. Absolutely worth it though, and I would 100% recommend! Thanks for a wonderful experience!

  3. We were a group of 6 people and had so much fun! The tourleader was great, she showed us, so many different plants, fruits and herbal during the track! I definitely recommend the tour 🙂

  4. We went on the two day Mae Hong Son trek with Ann and her father, who were fantastic guides. Ann had lots of interesting information about the area, its people, and the nature, and both were very patient and helpful with us throughout. We felt very well looked after throughout our homestay in the village. As others have mentioned, wear the right footwear!

  5. This was by far the best trek I have been in, everything was great. Communication to pick up and the actual trek. This is the real deal, most others I have been on have been very touristy. This is real trekking, this is advanced treeking. A bit more advanced than I thought but we managed. Our guides were not only informative and funny but also helped us a lot with their knowledge. The food was great as well, vegetarian options and meat options. If you are looking to trek in Chiang Mai this is the best option.

  6. Firstly – a few words about me and what I was looking for: I’m a 30’s guy with reasonable fitness looking for a non-touristic, eco-conscious trek. I’m from the city but have some past trekking experience in different countries quite a few years ago. Having looked at many different treks on offer via web, brochures in hotel, and asking around – I chose this one specifically as I wanted to visit the Karen Hill tribe and it felt authentic with genuine guides. They picked us up from hotel by truck around 6:30am and trekked to a Karen village located in the hills between Thailand and Burma. Our trek has 6 ‘tourists’ and 2 guides in total. The trek included walking through jungle, open paddy fields and everything between. It was challenging but do’able for a person who hadn’t been trekking for many years… 1st day was around 5h of trekking with quite a bit of elevation. i advise hiking gear = good boots, backpack and hat but guide had very basic stuff herself. We stayed with a lovely Karen family in their traditional stilt house, and ate traditional foods cooked by the family and guide. Lots of excellent explanations of foods, berries and materials along the way. 2nd day was less trekking (3-4h) which was good as body was aching. We ended with a massive waterfall and swim which was amazing. To add to the authentic experience I found a leech on my foot which was likely from the jungle part of the trek… but no long term harm! Highly recommended!!

  7. I can’t give enough praise to this trek. It was well organized and led by a wonderful and knowledgeable pair. It was the perfect way to spend two days in northern Thailand. I’d definitely second the reviews recommending good hiking gear for the trek- some areas were tough and muddy but manageable

  8. Trekked with 2 teenage daughters in south Mae Hong Son. Trip was exactly as expected and advertised. Guide is the lovely Ann who is clearly at ease with the trekking and the local villagers. Dad is a cutie, following along with his machete. A few things to know. The 3 hour drive is in a dual cab van with open bench seating not a mini bus so a slightly rough ride for westerners used to car seats. Roads are fine. Food is basic but nice and very substantial. We walked about 22km over the 2 days. It included some steep climbs for the reward of magnificent valley views. Proper trekking shoes are better than sandshoes, if you have them, because you cross streams and need some grip for the climbs. We stayed in a local home, sat with family while they cooked the evening meal. Definitely saw their way of life but no communication other than some basic questions through Ann. Sleep close together in one room and annex. We slept pretty well on bamboo floor on blankets / doona. They use a different local home in the village each trek to share the economic benefit around, which seems good. As usual with these treks the highlight was visiting the village school to see teachers and students making the best of their limited resources. Trek is well isolated but never that far from civilisation if there was any kind of problem. It really was a Tourist Free Zone – we came across no other trekkers, only 2 people who had found the swimming waterfall we enjoyed near the very end of the trek. The “price” for this isolation is the 3 hour drive each way but for us it was worth it. Our impression is that this company is small, genuine, local people who are trying hard to deliver an authentic experience for travellers. Don’t go with them if you are mobility impaired or looking for a drinking night in the jungle. Do go if you want a rewarding experience with good people.

  9. My brother and I (25 and 23 years old from Australia) did this trek in January this year. We had an amazing time – varied terrains and fantastic views; friendly and knowledgable guides in Ann and her father; a culturally insightful and welcoming homestay; and simple yet substantial food provided. It was the highlight of our trip to Thailand, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nature-based, culturally illuminating activity of moderate difficulty, slightly off the beaten track! 🙂

  10. I took this tour for research purposes (I am a novelist) and rather spur of the moment. I’d not planned on doing it before coming to Thailand so it was a bit of a struggle to get the things I needed. I was also sick two days before going, so I was still a bit weak. So I struggled with the trek. But I would do it all again (and plan to, with my husband). This is not a stroll in the park with wide, “safe” paths and casual chatting – most of the time, you need to save your breath. But our tour guide, Tiger, was absolutely wonderful – knowledgeable, funny, and as accommodating as he could possibly be to my struggles. I learned so much! Perhaps most importantly, I learned what kind of shoes one needs for trekking so that I will be more prepared next time. Running shoes are great if you want to cut down on the foot pain (I only have one blister and my feet aren’t sore at all; others had very sore feet). However, if they have no traction, LEAVE THEM AT HOME! I lost count of the number of times I fell (once into a muddy creek, at least 4-5 times on loose dirt/leaves) simply because my running shoes could not grip. Ideally, you’ll want to take your most comfortable hiking/army boots and be prepared that they may end up very muddy, even in the dry season.I’ll say it again for those, like me, who have never done trekking: This is NOT a walk in the park. If your ten-year-old jogs with you and leaves you in the dust, then by all means bring him along. But if your partner will complain about being head-to-toe dirty and dripping sweat, leave them to enjoy a massage in Chiang Mai while you go explore. But do explore… because there’s a tremendous amount to see and even coming from someone whose bruises have bruises, this was an amazing experience!
