Opkhan National Park is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking RO Pho Cho Chiang Mai 4037 Rd, 50230, Thailand
Less than 40 kms from Chiang Mai, this park is a great place to enjoy a day out from the city. After entering the park (no charge), the dirt road runs beside a fast-flowing river. A bamboo bridge crosses to the small campground, where you can pitch a tent for 50 baht a night. Tent rental is 350 baht. The road ends at the newly built Visitor’s Centre, which is not yet in operation. From there, a track will take you to the gorge, but be aware that this means climbing a fairly steep set of rustic steps hewn in the rock, then descending even more steeply. There’s a coffee shop selling drinks, snacks and noodle soup, which is open daily until 4:30pm. We were there on a weekday, and there were only 2 other sets of visitors. We enjoyed a picnic beside the river, and 4 hours flew by.
Not many tourist or locals know about this place. It’s about an hr drive from the city of Chiang Mai. You would either need to rent a car or get a driver to wait for you while you explore this place. The drive up might seem a little off beaten but once you reach here, it’s a gorgeous place to explore. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes and explore!
Great place for a picnic with a family or group. The visitor center was operational l yesterday, but maybe only on weekends? The river is great for a swim, but there is a fairly strong current in the middle, so please be careful with younger kids. We saw a woman cooking chicken just before the visitor center, but again she only appears to be there on weekends (we went past on a weekday and her stand was empty). After, make sure that you go back to the main road, but carry on for another 10 minutes or so. There is a wonderful temple that you can wander around in, tons of papaya trees, and what would be a great coffee shop (not open even during listed “open” hours).
It’s beautiful and great hike. Love the nature there. Local people are very nice and helpful. Recommend
I came here a couple of days ago with a couple of friends. I suggest using the cafe below as your base. They have coffee, soft drinks and free wifi. You can sit outside, there’s plenty of shade. To the right of the cafe is an information centre and toilets. There’s free parking. We didn’t pay to get into the park either. They are busy adding some railing on the side of the path going along the gorge. You can swim in the river. This is a nice get away from Chiang Mai. We spent the afternoon here.
