  1. In the late 18th Century part of Chanthaburi Province in Thailand was occupied by the French, who claimed that historically it was part of Cambodia, and thus was French colonial territory. To protect their interests the French built Fort Phairi Phinat on a hill, strategically overlooking the mouth of the Chanthaburi River as it empties into the Gulf of Thailand (Gulf of Siam). There is little left of the fort today, except for a couple of large cannons, and if you look closely some iron rails set in concrete to allow the cannons to be turned to aim at the river or out to sea. There was a brief Franco-Thai war at the end of the century, after which a treaty was signed in 1904 and the French agreed to withdraw from Chanthaburi. But it was a Pyrrhic victory, for Thailand had to cede other territory to regain Chanthaburi. To celebrate this historic event the Thais built a Chedi on top of the hill, overlooking the old French Fort several meters below it.While the Chedi has obviously received a coat of white paint sometime in the past few years, the site is generally neglected, with a sad accumulation of rubbish. The Chedi also has a decided list and unless something is done to prop it up, sooner or later it will come crashing down the hill to further annihilate the remnants of Fort Phairi Phinat, which somehow appeals to me as the ultimate irony.

  2. An nice easy little walk, Watch out for the monkeys trying to loot your bags, interesting history behind this little fort..

  3. There is a large temple in Isaraphap Soi 23, easily accessible by car, bus, or the blue line skytrain (Isaraphap Station). The atmosphere inside the temple is quiet, serene, clean, and orderly. There are three important halls inside, which are beautiful, and there are also old and venerable Buddha statues that are worthy of reverence and blessings.
