Lop Buri traces human habitation back to prehistory some 4,500 years ago or more, but it was the 17th century King Narai the Great who put Lop Buri on the map. He was the King of Ayutthaya, making Lop Buri his second capital.Not only that, he built a palace for himself, and a summer retreat where he exercised his passion for catching wild elephants. He also bought many of the European ambassadors and missionaries to Siam to Lop Buri and built them lavous houses and a church for Jesuit priests. Everywhere around Lop Buri you will stumble across the falling ruins of King Narai’s presence.In 1966, in recognition of this great king, Lop Buri erected a large statue to the king, which takes center place in a huge roundabout on the main street through Lop Buri, which itself forms a memorial park to the king.I last visited it yesterday (12 July) and witnessed a large military parade and wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of his death on that day in 1688.He made a lasting impression, obviously.
Getting to there was easy like as any other town in Thailand, jumped a tuk-tuk and give him extra Baht for a tour around.. amazing city.
After work, I visited the ruins of Lopburi. There were few people visiting at night, and few other people were visiting. King Narai the Great was the 27th monarch of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the 4th and last monarch of the Prasat Thong dynasty.
