  1. THIS temple sits on a hill on the north-west side of Chiang Rai.It can be reached on foot but the best way for any visitor to get there who is staying in central Chiang Rai is simply to hire a tuktuk. This is what I did, negotiating with the driver to take me to a total of eight historic sites across the city for 200 baht or just under £5. This meant I found each site easily and, more importantly on a very hot day, I could save my energy for exploring these attractions rather than finding them. This temple, which is just a few metres from the 108 City Pillars site, offers a slightly elevated view of the area including the Mae Kok Valley without being massively scenic.I was easily able to walk round in 10-15 minutes and I would advise visiting both the temple and its surrounds and the 108 City Pillars at the same time.Refreshments can be bought here but I did not see a public toilet.

  2. I continued driving along hills heading to Phra That Doi Tung. Phra That Doi Tung is the most famous relics of Chiang Rai. It is beautiful and is located in a mountain, about 2,000 meters above sea level. Doi Tung relics is a golden pagoda with two pairs in the shape of a castle with a small round bell and set on square base Clay Tile. It is very beautiful The symbol of the pagoda is an elephant (Kunchorn.) In addition, there is an annual festival helded at the Doi Tung Phra That. Buddhists from both neighboring Thailand and neighboring countries such as Chiang Tung, Shan State Myanmar Luang Prabang Vientiane people, come to worship every year. In the winter, the atmosphere around the relic is especially beautiful because it is covered by white mist all over.

  3. If you visit Pathat Doitunge could you please walking to viewpoint It is the must you get it, incredible and so beautiful especially it’s free.

  4. A very nice, authentic and non-commercial temple. However, there are restriction for access to the temple itself for females… access to inner temple building is not allowed. Disappointing for the wife and daughter.

  5. When you visit chiangrai dont miss the local temple Wat Prathat Doitong, As usual we went there with our guide, friend and driver mr Pad tel:+66(0)867948073The temple is under renovation but they have come rather close to be finished. You drive up the hill road on the right and down on the left side. There is platoe with buddha figure where you can look out on Chiangrai. BUT when you leave, then walk along the temple left side towards the road going down from temple. Just walk slong the temple untill the next step would be falling down on the hillside, it,s totaly quiet except for the birds and butterflied flying around. Look at at view towards the mountains far away, -Amazing view. Then you start walk down the hillroad and after about 50-100 meter to your right there is a house with elephant statues, -walk in 10 meter where you will see what once where steps up to the very old viewing point. Make the effort to walk the old strps(whats left of them) and when you come up there then you will see on a sunny day the most astonishing view towards the montains and will see the temple on the mountains far far away. Do not miss this!! Its 30 year since i first climb theese steps….//lars Sweden

  6. We hired a taxi for the day, (2,500 baht, Mr Witthaya, 0987763479) & visited this temple after the Royal Villa and Mae Fah Luang Garden, Doi Tung. There aren’t too many visitors like in Wat Phra Doi Suthep. There are statues of pigs around the place since it is a place of pilgrimage for people born in the year of the Pig. It is basically a small place. Monks and devotees were bowing & praying at the golden stupas. I walked around the golden stupas clockwise 7 times to offer prayers for world peace.

  7. Wat Phrathat Doi Tong was very peaceful. The weather was very nice in December. The road up to the temple was a bit difficult, better on a sunny day.

  8. Look out for the dogs! No worries but they may follow you around. A nice quiet temple, and I enjoyed the chedi, the stupa, the temple, and that other circular thingy next to it.

  9. For the most part, I feel that many of the temples have many similarities. So when you have the opportunity to go to one that has something different, I want to see it.For the Wat Phra That Doi Tung temple, it was the twin golden pagodas that attracted me to this temple. When I arrived there, it was quite quiet and there were not many people which was nice. To get to the top, you will have to climb up a set of stairs of about 180 steps. It’s worth the effort when you reach the top and see the twin golden pagodas. For some reason, women cannot go through the gates to the double pagodas to get a close look at them. To be honest, it’s not important to get a close look anyways. I did not even go through the gates. I just stood outside and took a few photos. There are not many temples with twin golden pagodas so I would highly recommend going there to see something different.
