  1. This shrine has been worshipped for over a thousand years. It was originally thought to have been founded in 940 AD. Some 300 years later, in 1260, King Mangrai — the founder of Chiang Rai visited Phra That Do Chom Thong and created the city around it.’Phra That’ means ‘relics of the Buddha’ and, of course, the shrine holds relics passed from India to Chiang Rai long before Thailand was an established nation. Come here to see how sacred sites shape the history of the area, as well as witness local customs.

  2. When you look at the main temple when you have walked up one of the 2 roads leading to the temple. On the left side of the main temple straightahead there is a small under roof viewing Point. Please sit down and look at the view of chiangrai provins mounting and see the butterflies flying around you when you look , listen to the singing birds.. The World comes to an halt. On you way down from this viewing Point , just walk 50-100 meter check to the right and look for small elephant in an garden. Go inside 10 meter and you will find an old stair where you can manager to climb up the an OLD viewing Point.. When you are there you will understand that its old bec green moss is under your feet on the Concrete. Look out to the Mountains far awai and you will see an Amazing view of temple up on the Mountains side far away, -Amazing is the Word……

  3. We stopped to visit this Wat for an hour… Very serene place to visit. Located in town. Signs located nearby in English guide you up the hill to the Wat.

  4. This temple overlooks the entire city area and has a scenic view of the Kok river. Built as long ago as the 10th century. The highlight is the golden hexagonal chedi which houses the Lord Buddha’s relics, it is close by the Naval City Pillar so you can see both at the same time. A very serene place to visit

  5. This temple is unusual in that it holds the relics of the Buddha. It has been in use for almost 1,000 yrs. Built on a hill, it offers beautiful views onto the river below. Definitely worth going to if you are in Chiang Rai.

  6. Built on the top of a mountain surrounding the city this is a large temple with charm. Is situated some thirty minutes driving distance from city centre and is well worth a visit. Grounds are quite large and well maintained. Well worth a visit.

  7. the significant ancient monastery with historical relevant stories about Chiang Rai town establishment legend since the previous day. nice to see the brand new chapel building, however from my personal, the previous old Lanna traditional structure style would be more attractive and charming.the stunning elaborately fine art work of the wooden chapel door was so beautiful.worth for visiting place, even thought the building structure was a bit new.

  8. This site was believed to be the home of spirits before there was Buddhism.Elephants are part of the legend of Doi Chom Thong. It is said that King Mang Rai was following an elephant that had wandered off when he first came upon Doi Chom Thong, this solitary hill on the banks of the River Kok.The Golden Chedi is in the center of the wat. According to the Yonok Chronicle, the Chedi was originally built in 940 to house the Lord Buddha’s relics. When King Mang Rai visited Doi Chom Thong in 1263 he found the area suitable for the establishment of a city. He then ordered the beginning of the construction of the city of Chiang Rai and had Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong restored.

  9. Just another temple, untidy and needs some tlc.Not really worth the trek up the big hillSeen a lot more better ones in the area

  10. It is just a temple on the small hill in Chiangrai City center. It has fair ordination hall and gold pagoda (mixed Burmese architecture and Lanna styles). The most interesting point is City Navel which is composed of a navy pillar and 108 other pillars.
