10 thoughts on “Wat Ming Mueang Temple

  1. Just a cm smaller than the original residing in Bangkok. Temple is over 700 years old . Architecture is magnificent. Artwork on walls beautiful.

  2. One of oldest temples in Chaing Rai, architecturally talking is just another temple to see, but historically and culturally is one of the richest temples around

  3. The exterior is lavishly decorated. We also bumped into a couple taking wedding photos in the afternoon. Overall, it’s not a great deal but worth a quick look in if you are nearby and has nothing on hand. The tour should not take more than 15mins.

  4. Very beautiful 700 year old temple, built in the reign of King Mengrai the Great (1239-1311) and was called until 1970 Wat Chang Moop – “Temple of the Crouching Elephant” … .. In 1970, it was renamed Wat Ming Muang, meaning the Auspicious Temple of the City .. and was granted Wisung Khama Sima (a royal granting of the land for monks to have the ordination hall or to do religious rites.. According to the ancient evidence and rumor, the founder of Wat Ming Muang was Chao Nang Talamae Sri, wife of King Mengrai and daughter of a Burmese King, .This temple was a personal temple of Phra Nang Ming Uao Jom Muang, King Meng Rai’s mother …. Wat Ming Muang has an assembly hall with a design known as “Buddha’s eyebrows” To see a very beautiful bronze sculpture of the King Mengrai and his wife, the Queen Devi Usapayako …. There were workS in progress, and some buildings closed .. Really different from the other temples in the area, I recommend a visit without hesitation

  5. We stop here as it was on the way to the north part of the city. A lovely standing Buddha on the front of the temple.

  6. Here is a real temple which has been functioning for local people, market people for generations. Easy to visit along with nearby Mung Mueang temple.

  7. This temple is around the city Center neighbourhood. It was built over 700 years ago ( between 1239-1311) it is known as the temple of the crouching elephant. Apparently it was the personal temple of King M’engager Rai’s mother. It is ornately decorated, the architecture is splendid.

  8. We visited this 700-year old temple as part of a walking tour in Chiang Rai. Entrance is free. According to the information board it was built by King Mengrai as a memorial of his mother. During those days the Royal elephants took a bow here and was also known as ‘The Temple of Crouching Elephants’. There are two main buildings both of which are lavishly decorated both inside and exteriorly. There is a white coloured Chedi, the peak of which is golden painted. We were there at noon and it was quite a hot weather and best to carry a hat, sunblock and water with you. We spent about 40 Minutes here to look around and capture some pictures.

  9. This underrated temple is frequently confused with Wat Mung Muang. This temple is simply gorgeous and is unusual because it is full of beautiful portraits. Everything is shiny and at night the lights reflect well. This is my favourite temple in Chiang Rai.
