Ying’s Thai Cooking Home is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking 359/12 Moo 3, 84140, Thailand
We had an amazing experience with Ying’s Thai Cooking Home! Ying does a great job of breaking down the ingredients of each recipe that you choose as well as instructing you how to build the dish with ingredients native to the specific region in Thailand. We learned a ton about not only cooking Thai food but the history of Thailand as well. I cannot say enough about this class as well as how welcoming Ying and Daniel are!
What an incredible day we had at Yings cooking class.I loved the fact that she meets you at a local wet market and you shop for all the ingredients that you’ll use for your chosen recipes.Getting stuck in with the locals and being taught so much as you go along.Yings knowledge on Thai cuisine is unquestionable. She modestly says that she’s still learning every day , but she is a fountain of knowledge .I took my mum for this class and Ying/Daniel really catered for our every need. We all chopped , sliced and pounded throughout the lesson with the freshest of ingredients .Not a single ingredient came out of a tin/packet or sachet.Ying insists that all her recipes are to be made from scratch without cutting any corners and that’s the type of cooking that appeals to me .All in all, I would highly recommend anyone who’s a keen cook to book her class. Was worth every penny . I recently took a Thai cooking class with Ying and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. The experience began with a visit to a local fresh market where we picked out the ingredients for the dishes we would be making. This added a whole new level of excitement and authenticity to the class, as we got to see the fresh and colourful ingredients that would be used in our cooking. Ying was a fantastic host, explaining the different spices and ingredients used in Thai cuisine and their significance and history. The hands-on cooking experience was fantastic and Ying was a great teacher, breaking down each step of the recipes and providing helpful tips and tricks along the way. I was able to learn and prepare dishes with confidence and ease. The end result was delicious and the entire day was a fun and interactive experience. I highly recommend this Thai cooking class with Ying to anyone who loves food and wants to expand their culinary skills. It was an unforgettable experience and I can’t wait to make these dishes at home. This was a masterclass and one of the highlight of our month in Thailand
We spent two weeks in Thailand and this was easily the highlight of the trip. This class teaches you more traditional Thai cooking, which is exactly what we were looking for as we already knew how to make the staples (phad thai, etc). Before the class, we were presented with 30 or so recipes (a mix of northern, central and southern Thai dishes) to choose from which we selected three to make. We had never seen any of these items on any menu and were very excited to try something new.I knew we were off to a good start when we met Ying at the local market and she was wearing a t-shirt that said “Mischief Manager” – she knows how to combine teaching with fun. We spent a good amount of time walking around the market with Ying providing details on some of the ingredients that are less common in western cooking. The market was really a feast for eyes, bountiful produce and fresh caught fish galore. After walking around market and getting ingredient, we headed to her house with open-air kitchen where we met her dad and husband. Talk about hospitable hosts, Ying and her family know how to make you feel like welcome guests. While we got settled, we had a nice purple pea flower tea before getting started. Ying gave us a bit of history on traditional Thai cooking and it’s foundations (sour, sweet, salty and spice). Then the cooking began, we made our own pastes and even got to make coconut milk from fresh coconuts. Since the classes are small, you get dedicated attention and there was never a moment you were idle. After each course, we’d adjourn to the dinning area and enjoyed the dish with some yummy iced lemongrass-pandan tea. When we wrapped up at 4pm, they even helped organize transportation back to our hotel, which was more than expected. During the class, Ying’s husband took photos so you could focus on the task at hand, a pleasant bonus to remember the experience. After the class, we got pictures from our day and recipes for the dishes we made, as well as a few other recipes to try. Highly recommend this class for your stay in Samui, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
I loved learning about authentic Thai cuisine and the history and geography behind some dishes and ingredients. I gave me a different appreciation for Thai cuisine.
We had the most marvellous and special experience not just in learning the often intangible intricacies of Thai cooking (that we could never gleam from online!), but also in getting to know such wonderful, knowledgeable and worldly people as are Ying and Daniel. To say that it was the best cooking class we have ever done is most definitely not an understatement. Ying taught us not only what but also how – how to actually taste to balance flavours – something that recipes often tell you to do, but you can’t do unless you’ve properly practised and been guided in it.We gained a deep appreciation not just for the cuisine but also the culture, history and geography of this fascinating corner of the world.Thank you, Ying and Daniel, for an unforgettable experience. We wish you all the luck and success in this beautiful thing you do as you unveil the culinary secrets of this magnificent cuisine to other people.
If you are thinking of taking place in a Thai cooking course, then look no further! We met Ying as arranged at the local market – I have to admit the fish and meat market were a little to full on for me – but they let me sit it out with a can of coke looking at the sea.You don’t just do a day’s course here – you are accepted and welcomed into Ying and Daniel’s home for the day – you become their friend.I have done a few cookery courses but this is the first one where I have been given a background of the history and culture involved in Thai food. Ying goes through everything you could wish to know based on the relatively small amount of time you have with her. You come away with a new understanding and appreciation of the food you are cooking and an all round respect for the way the meal actually gets onto your plate.Ying and Daniel’s home is a beautiful oasis of peace and tranquility – you feel it as soon as you arrive and are introduced to their property and lifestyle. The food we cooked was so different to the run of the mill chicken satay and pad thai (not that there is anything wrong with that at all – love them both). We were taught about the individual ingredients, how they all come together into the meals, and how each meal is also a part of the family, the history and the food culture. One thing that made a huge difference was actually cooking on a traditional coconut charcoal fired area – the fact there are no walls, means you can ‘slightly’ overcood the spices and the smells don’t hang around long!It was a total pleasure spending the day with Ying and Daniel and Ying’s dad. Their friendship and patience was very welcome. We would have no hesitation in recommending that you relax (a little), spend a day in total heaven and come away with nicely full bellies.I hope this review helps – if in doubt – GO FOR IT :-)Thanks again Ying and Daniel – much loveJill and John
The food was amazing and it was fun to make the food that tasted like I was in heaven it was so fun I would definitely like to come again
