This is a lovely & quirky shop shared by 3 designers. You get handmade/ handcrafted jewelry, clothing, bags, pareos and knick-knacks. Was made to understand by the lady who was manning the shop that the jewelries were made by her husband, whilst she designs the clothing. She was very friendly and helpful and I was happy that she could communicate in English well. That made my day after a hot afternoon of street shopping. :)I bought 2 necklaces and a cute leather sling bag. Wished I could buy more of the stuff they had. Only downer is they don’t give you discounts even if you buy a few items at one go, although the price tags are a little pricey. I received compliments for the bag while wearing it the next day. Will definitely go back the next time I’m in CM.
This shop is a real gem. Everything in the store is unique and handmade by the artists that work in the store. The artists are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their crafts. We bought a beautiful statue of a monk made of teak. If before we leave Thailand we come back through Chiang Mai I will definitely go back to buy one of their beautiful, handcrafted music boxes.??
I passed by the shop and was attracted by the window. It is colourful. On-site, there is a very nice selection of jewellery, tassels, bags. Everything is handmade and the staff was very nice, explaining the story of the goods!
I found this shop to be a wonderful source of unique hand-crafted souvenirs and gifts from Chiang Mai. Walking Old Chiang Mai I found only a few shops with truly unique, quality gifts, and they were primarily jewelry shops. I was looking for handmade elephant art / crafts and had seen some here during my first hour walking around. I wanted to see what other shops had and after stopping in most every shop in the Old City I came back to By Design. Not only do they have the most lovely gifts, but the woman manning the shop was extremely pleasant. I bought two hand-painted resin elephants and may have purchased more had I had more time. I would certainly return again!
I live in the US and always visit the store when I’m in Chiangmai, usually annually. In fact, each year, it’s the one and only store I won’t miss! I’ve been buying their colorful pants from the old location to the new one on the Walking Street Market. This store is one of a kind; from the store’s concept itself to the handmade merchandise they carry. I pick up one pair of pants every year, in different color for my collection. It’s a lovely boutique with lovely staff. Just looking at the merchandise makes me happy! Colorful, lively, artful, playful, joyful! I know the price is higher than any other tourist shops, but you’re paying for a handmade, handcrafted item, not mass-produced stuff from factories. Very likely, the styles and colors of the clothing items rotate often there are only a few duplicates, although never at the same time. If you’re looking for a cheap pair of rayon/polyester elephant pants, this is not the place for you. If you want something beautiful, unique and artistic, made with love, from the heart and soul, with good spirit behind them, put By Design on your list! BTW, for those who think this store should give you discount because you buy multiples… Have you ever tried asking for a discount at a department store? If so, did you get one? If the department store didn’t give you one, why ask for it at a tiny, privately owned, INDEPENDENT shop?This IS a “small business” (as we call it in the US) run by artists who put time, effort, energy and love into their products. You are supporting people who are willing to work hard, with their hands, and their hearts, for their craft.
