Because of all the accidents with scooters we were hesitating about renting one.But then we saw the possibility of renting a scooter with sidecar. The friendly owner brought the sidecar to our hotel and gave some brief instructions plus a test ride.I am an experienced motorcycle rider but never with a sidecar. It is a totally different experience but we had so much fun! Attraction from other people guaranteed! A lot of smiles when we passed by.Going up and down the hills you have to be careful. It is heavier so go down slowly to maintain control of your sidecar!Extending our rent was no problem, the same as returning the sidecar early in the morning when we had to catch our bus.
Oh wow! What an experience… If you’re in any doubt about riding a scooter, have kids or a mate/partner who you don’t want to ride pillion (or if they don’t want to either) you MUST hire from Candy Road. – Trust me you will have more fun and you can actually have a conversation as you go. My partner and I arrived in Pai knowing we would probably need to hire a scooter to see all that we wanted before leaving. Unfortunately both of us were worried about riding/with pillion on a rental scooter having heard the horror stories of tourists crashing on dusty roads coupled with the considerable time since either of us had ridden a moped. However on our first saunter around town shaking off “that” bus ride we stumbled, quite by accident, on Candy Road. We saw the scooter and side car combo and just had to know more. We had a conversation with the owner about availability (he only had one just off hire in the store and an orderboard full of bookings) he talked us through the fleet of 10 bikes, where the scooters could go and everything the hire included (helmets, initial tuition, roadside assistance if needed and the deposit) I’m never one to jump in to anything without discussing it properly with my partner so we had a wander around the block. We weighed up the cost of hiring two individual scooters, with twice the fuel and deposit – not to mention twice the risk of falling off! Or the cost of the dozens of different tour busses we’d been offered that afternoon (noting we didn’t want to go to all of their locations and tourist traps!) and actually the Candy Road option made perfect sense. So we went back to the shop and signed up. Left a name and email address to secure the bike for the next day. When we arrived the owners wife greeted us, stowed our deposit safely in a clearly labelled envelope (with the number of the bike!) took us across the road to a parking lot to show us how the bike worked. Her instructions were very easy to understand and in clear English. She explained the damage/breakages policy and how each bike was custom made/finished. Only when she was convinced both my partner and I were entirely satisfied did we go back across the road to finish off the paperwork – by this time there were several others wanting to hire, now I can see why!In our one day hire we ticked off almost all of the places we wanted to go around Pai, with none of the mega touristy traps. If it wasn’t hot season we might have stayed longer at the waterfalls but it was our choice of when and where to visit. The bike went everywhere we asked it even some hills I thought a moped might struggle. We exchanged a cheeky beep and a wave to other sidecars we met on our travels – I even saw one couple argue because she saw how happy and comfortable my partner was in the side car. Even with all our exuberant riding we only used a little over half a tank of fuel so the sidecar couldn’t have added too much at all. Returning the bike was a similarly pain free experience, a quick once over and fuel level check and my deposit was returned. Would I hire here again? In a heartbeat. Thank you Candy Road 🙂
Was back in Pai to visit friends again so as always we get a sidecar combo. Because we’re frequent customers the guy gave us a couple of extra days free which just made our trip! Have to say right now tho, I just read the other reviews and we saw the Israeli guy and his wife screaming at the owner (the wife was seriously crazy). They broke a metal part on the bike and didn’t want responsibility for it; they admitted they broke it but didn’t seem to care. The photo is misleading cos the police sided with the owner cos they admitted it and had to pay. The owner even said they could go get it fixed themselves if they were concerned about the charge. I’d have been far less patient if I was the owners – you’ll always get some crazy customers.Anyway guys I just wanted to say thanks again for being awesome and we’ll see you in another 6 months!
Stuart, his wife and children are so incredibly kind and friendly. Stuart gave us an orientation/trial ride beforehand. He was extremely knowledgable and patient. It was the perfect introduction to learning to ride. I tried a scooter beforehand but found it too scary. Thanks to this sidecar experience I have now been riding scooters across various countries! On top of that, this sidecar is super fun and photogenic, roaming around Pai in style! It’s great because you can take turns driving and sitting in the pod. Both are a totally different feeling. My friend and I found it such a cool experience at such a low cost. I highly recommend!
As Thailand is so dangerous to drive in we have been reluctant to hire a scooter for our travels, given that we don’t ride one in the UK. When we saw a scooter and side car at Candy Road Motorcycles we were really excited – and it turned out to be the highlight of our short trip to Pai! It enabled us to visit waterfalls and beautiful areas that we could not walk to, without the stress and worry of a wobbly scooter. Thanks!
This is a hidden gem. Not well advertised, we only found it by asking someone whohad rented one already. I didn’t want to rent a bike but they spoke so well about the shop I gave them a chance and sooooglad I did! Really easy and so much safer with the baby. The awesome bit was wegot a flat tyre and the shop came out andfixed it for us no charge - never expected that.
When we returned the bike, agent claimed we didn’t pay in advance (we did). Owner was rude, violent and unwilling to talk. At no point we had a plan run away without reaching an agreement, but the owner would not listen, just said that we should pay immediately or he will call the police. We didn’t care about paying extra 10$, but his attitude was horrible. Eventually we paid and left the place, only to read on TripAdvisor that others had similar experience.
Overall great experience. Very fun to ride around Pai. My son loved sitting in the side care. But, it does not make it up some of the steep hills surrounding Pai. It was difficult to get to the Bamboo Bridge and got stuck in middle of an uphill to the hot springs. Overall, great for driving around the center of town but not for bringing on day trips out of the town center.
Our family of 2 adults and 3 children (aged 9, 8, 5) spent five days in Pai. We were keen to get out and about independently but were a little unsure about renting scooters due to the unpredictability of our younger kids. The scooter and sidecar from Candy Road was absolutely perfect and great fun – we hired 2. The sidecar arrangement comfortably carries two smaller children. Apart from one very very steep hill, the bikes had adequate power to comfortably transport us around at a good pace without difficulty. They were well maintained. Their styling almost adds to the fun – they look great and you end up smiling, waving and chatting to passers by who can’t help but smile as you pass.I note a couple of reviews about the owner being rude. This is certainly not the experience we had. It is owned by Stuart, an Australian now living in Pai and his Thai wife, both of whom were charming and couldn’t have been more helpful. Before hiring we had a good orientation and trial ride, when one of the kids covered over the ignition with a security cover that we couldn’t work out how to disengage, Stuart was easily contacted for advice. I can only assume therefore that the couple of reviewers who made these comments previously had an axe to grind.A great experience. You’ll love them.
We’ve had an amazing few days on this thing! So much fun for my boyfriend and I to bomb around Pai. The guy that owns it is seriously cool with his projects! Gave us helpful advice and spent time chatting with us before and after we used the bike. We used our drone to get some cool video shots too. Would definitely recommend this place!!
