Kad Sala Mae Kru Kum is a vibrant local community enterprise located in the town of San Pa Tong, approximately 30 minutes south of Chiang Mai. Our collective has been dedicated to the art of woodcarving for an impressive 150 years, passing down this intricate craft through generations of skilled artisans. Our work embodies the rich history of the Thai Lanna culture, making us not just craftsmen but also a living museum where visitors can explore and appreciate our heritage.
We take pride in creating beautiful and high-quality wood carvings that reflect our dedication and craftsmanship. Our workshop welcomes visitors to engage directly with talented woodcarvers, offering a unique opportunity to witness this age-old tradition in action. In addition to our craft, we have established an English program known as Open Mind Camp. This initiative allows us to connect with the global community and share the beauty of our village while promoting cultural exchange.
Volunteers play an integral role in this program, contributing their time and knowledge by teaching English classes to both children and adults at various levels. We invite individuals with diverse career experiences to enrich our classrooms and share their unique skills and stories. Life with us is communal, as volunteers stay together in shared accommodations that include a bed, bedding, a fan, and mosquito nets, fostering a sense of friendship and collaboration. Join us in this remarkable journey, celebrating the art of woodcarving and creating bonds that transcend cultures.

Perfect choice if you plan to stay out of the busy Chiang Mai but close enough to drive (private or public transportation) back and forth while exploring the surroundings. Located in a woodcarving villa will help you to know more about north Thailand and its community. Beautiful, quiet, and relaxed place to stay either by yourself or with family and friends.
Highly recommended if you are looking for beautiful woodcarving pieces, homestay, workshops and to support a social project.Kad Sala aims to support the local community of wood carving families by organizing multiple programs. The place pretty close to Chiang Mai is surrounded by nature and friendly people.
I really enjoyed my time in Kad Sala located in a tiny and gorgeous woodcraft village. It’s a unique experience where you can meet local woodcraft artisans in action and enjoy the very quiet and lovely atmosphere, away from the crowd. Their amazing carvings are for sale at very reasonable prices. Everything is beautifully decorated with wood works. The people who run it are very attentive. They gave us Thai cooking classes and we helped teaching English to local children. You can take a bike and ride around the lovely neighbourhood with very pretty houses that I didn’t see anywhere else in Thailand and visit local markets. It was an authentic experience that I would recommend to anyone coming to Chiang Mai.
The people at this place are not only supporting the local woodcarving, but have also a nice and quite hotel (see on Trip Advisor “Kad Sala Village”). I was volunteering there for 2 weeks and it was great fun: We teached english to adults during weekdays and on Saturday / Sunday children were coming to Kad Sala for the weekend classes. If you want to find a good place without the loud and fast city come to Kad Sala, it is only 30 minutes away in the south of Chiang Mai.
Kad Sala was my first workaway/ volunteer job and it was absolutely amazing! I really had the best experience, it was very peaceful and fulfilling the whole time i stayed. Pantila, Nan, Mamee, and Buddy were fantastic host and made you feel so comfortable the whole time. I woke up with a smile on my face every morning ready to teach English and learn about Thai culture. I will for sure be back at the end of february to volunteer again! If youre thinking about coming to Thailand this should be your first stop for sure!Thank you for having me! I cant wait to be back:)
I stayed in Kad Sala for 10 days for a volounteering experience. I had the opportunity to meet wonderful thai people that welcomed me since the first day. If you are searching for a relaxing place, surrounded by trees, wooden houses, handicraft places and beautiful countryside this is the perfect place for you. It is not the classic experience you can get in the cities. Here you can simply meet people in their every-day life, and they will be happy to talk with you about their experience in wood carving, or sharing their amazing thai food recipes.
I stayed more than 2 weeks in Kad Sala, it is a perfect place for those who are looking for a peaceful and quiet stay. It’s a countryside but not far away from the city. You can wander around, take a bike trip, meet local people (wood carvers included) and just enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. A lot of beautiful nature around and hosts are very nice.
First I would like to say that I was a volunteer at this place so I can not give a revieuw on the rooms, therefore I will just give a revieuw on the atmosphere of kad sala as a whole. The first thing you notice when you walk into kad sala is how green everything is. There are plants and trees everywhere and kombined with the traditional wooden houses which are right at home in all of this greenery it feels like an oasis. The people of kad sala are very hospiteble and very nice. Sadly they lead a very buzy life so they might not always be there. It is also important to note that kad sala is quite isloated. For me this was perfecf because I loved the peace and quiet. There is stil a lot to do though. For example you can take a woodcarving class, learn to thaibox in a nearby gym or get an authentic thai massage in the nearest village for just 120 baht. In the weekend there are very nice cooking classes to attend, but through the week you need to venture out to get your own food. The vollunteers where also very nice. And yes they might be on their phone quite oftun, but just reach out to them and they will surely help you. You might even make a new friend.
Kadsala is very quiet and peaceful place. The staffs, specially the wonderful and hardworking women Nan, Pantila and Ati, are very kind and helpful when you ask them anything. In the village, you can see a lot of woodcarving beautiful work to buy, including fornitures, and a lot of trees and green areas. You can just stay in the place to rest but is possible to visit Chiang Mai (approximately 50 min using public transport from the center of San Pa Tong), or maybe the Grand Canyon or other touristic places nearby – of course, it is up to you, but the staffs always help you when you need. I stayed in Kadsala for two weeks doing a volunteer work, so I didn’t stay in the guests rooms, but I saw most of them and they are really comfortable and comfy. In summary, I had a great time there.Fernanda
This is such an amazing place, only 30 mins away from Chiang Mai.Am authentic local place full of artisans that keep woodcarving traditions alive. You will see the artisans working in their masterpieces, have the opportunity to speak with them and take woodcarving classes creating your own art! People are so nice here, you can also visit the Open Mind Camp, where international volunteers teach English to kids. Right behind the artisans’ shop there is a beautiful homestay and a delicious Thai restaurant, very relaxing and elegant with great food and people!!Definitely worth to spend some time here!!
