Sanpatong buffalo market is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Han dong road , Thailand
The Sanpatong Buffalo market is well worth a visit when touring with other destinations in mind.I found an hour or so at the market to be fun and interesting. Coming from Chiangmai and arriving at the market which straddles both sides of the road, there is ample parking on the left side although the entrance to the parking is not so easy to notice. The buffalo market is only on the right side but take the time to walk around and see whats going on, what is a available and taste a few things. Food, plants and interesting objects of some peoples’ daily use. All fascinating! The market is open from early morning about 4.30 am til about 2 pm. Not so far from the market is the Mae Wang valley with rafting, elephants and fun places to eat.
For those wishing to experience a local market without the tourists a drive to the San Patong Market is worth the trip. Known as the Buffalo Market anything and everything can be bought here, you just have to find it in the mass of stores. Food, clothes, shoes, tools, electronics, motorbikes, pushbikes, fish, roosters, cows and yes buffalos to name a few. This is one market I will be returning to as I loved the local rural atmosphere.
Taste of True Thailand , Sights , Smells , Livestock, household goods , clothes, tourist items , practically every thing you possibly need. Savour the atmosphere, plenty of photo opportunities, local produce and eating experiences. Explore both sides of the road , I’m going to visit on every Chiang mai visits in the future.
After going to Saturday and Sunday night walking markets this was a nice relief from all of the usual souvenirs and cats. This is where the farmers and locals go on Saturday mornings for the real thing! Fun to take pictures, eat authentic food and but anything you could need!!

Originally called farmer market. This buffalo market is the biggest market in Chiang Mai. Apart from its original farmer’s buffalo/cow and fighting chicken stocks, they are also all kind of varieties staff in food/clothings/crafting etc etc selling here. The price tags are cheap as well. Well recommended for visiting.
It is great but best to arrive very early in fact well worth the early wakeup call so you can be there say 7:00 am Be it a motorbike or a water buffalo or even a flock of chicken you will find it here.
This is about as authentic a market as there can be. Every Saturday morning, starting about 5am, farmers and handicraft people come from the rural areas and mountains to sell their wares. You will see things here you will not see anywhere else. This is where the locals shop for everything from used motorcycles and bikes, shoes, electronics, cooking utensils to herbs, vegetables, local medicines, sweets, fruits and little cafes where locals tuck into big steaming bowls of soups and various local delicacies. Ant eggs? Yes, you can find them here!
