  1. Wiang Tha Kan was a satellite town of the Mon state of Haripunchai, today’s Lamphun, founded about a thousand years ago and abandoned around the 16th century. With the ruins in a quiet suburban neighborhood several km south of Sanpatong, it’s like a smaller version of Wiang Kum Kam. Most of the ruins are merely foundations, but a few feature full-sized chedis in fair condition, though the one at Wat Ku Mai Dang looks ready to topple over. A Buddha statue in front of one of the two chedis at Wat Mae Klang Wiang, near the information center, displays the traits common to Mon-Khmer sculpture–very thick lips, for example, different from Thai Buddhas. Exploration of the area is easy, following the English language signs, and is a pleasant diversion for anyone headed to Chomthong or Doi Inthanon further on

  2. There are many ancient archaeological sites all over Thailand and many are much larger than Wiang Tha Kan near Chiang Mai but don’t be put off. This site is extremely interesting and worthy of spending some time exploring. There are a number of different parts, some of which appear like the foundations to large temple buildings but there are a few Chedi which appear more or less complete. There’s also what looks like a relatively new information centre but the information boards are only in Thai but outside, some are in both Thai and English. There’s ample car parking immediately in front of the site and entrance appears free.If you are in the area, well worth visiting. All on one level so anyone with mobility problems could visit.
