This has been an amazing experience! Caroline adapted the hike according to our preferences and local guides and cooks Suteph and Todd made it the experience complete. Sustainability is something this small business clearly pays attention to, which we find very important. Small groups, not like their commercial competition and more unique locations and hikes. The food was definitely some of the best I’ve had in 6 months travelling through Asia! I recommend the trekking collective for all kinds of hikes, especially multiple-day (3+) ones. If time had allowed us, we would’ve stayed at least a week!
Our family of 3 wanted to get out of the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai so booked a day’s trekking and rafting. A real treat! The guide collects you from your hotel and takes you first to a morning market to buy supplies and lunch. Then off to the hills. Our trek lasted around 1.5 hours through very peaceful forests. We saw only local villagers/hunters on the path, so it was incredibly peaceful. The guide was very knowledgeable – explaining the medicinal use of wild plants. You arrive at a local village on the river bank where you eat lunch and the locals are happy to sell you ice cold drinks and show you a range of local handicrafts if you’d like to buy (no pressure). Meanwhile, on the river bamboo poles are lashed together to make a raft. The raft down the river took around 2 hours (cameras etc should go in sealable bags and there’s a raised basket to put them in). It goes through a series of mini rapids – great fun but you will get wet so take a change of clothes! The river trip is incredibly serene – no sounds of tuk tuks or traffic. You end up at a village where you can change and then be collected for the return trip to CMai. We really enjoyed the fact that it was just the 3 of us plus the guide – no mass tourism with Trekking Collective!
I spent a long time trying to find a socially conscious, smaller company, to take me on a trek. I was not interested in the elephant experience and was especially not interested in a company that exploits villages where tourists are constantly visiting and making spectacles of the indigenous communities and the way they live. I just wanted to understand the culture and have an immersive, authentic, experience. Mr. Chang is so knowledgeable, and it is clear that the people revere him. You will be treated very well as one of his guests. I did a two day trek, and it was perfectly catered to my interests. I am concerned about ethical travel, and decolonizing travel, and I felt like trekking with this company was a very healthy way to interact with the Lahu community. I would highly recommend this company, if you are able to pay more than what the other companies charge. It’s much more personal and worth it!
We absolutely loved our 2 day trek with Trekking Collective. Suthep has amazing local knowledge he shared en route and he took great care of us particularly because we had a few injuries bothering us before the trip. His food was absolutely amazing. We really enjoyed the experience of staying in the village and gaining some insight into local way of life. Caroline was also excellent in helping organise everything and answering all our queries. We couldn’t rate this experience more highly and hope to return for another trip in the future.
First, if you want/like simple trekking and walking trip middle of locals – this would be excellent choice. But, if you expect “hotel level accommodation and some national costume show, select some other company. The 4 days trekking was exactly same what we was expected, walking middle of hills, quiet evenings and local food. Accomodations was simple quest houses, all of them was also at least running water and simple toilet. This trekking is not for runners, my own teen was little bit disappointed for speed of walking…for my own- middle age man point of view, speed was quite ok.
Had the most amazing time with this company , that do all sort of ethical tours , we wanted timewith the elephants and then a few hours around the temples and villages , we didn’t have time for trekking although next time we would love to experience a 1 to 4 night trip .Elephants were amazing just my wife and I forhours observing, listening , taking one down to the river and bathing , mud washing it . We prepared food for them too and fed them -I n c r e d I b l e – Chang Mai is full of travel places , this is owner run with his wife and was the highlight of our holiday/ honeymoon away .Chang is amazing and full of info and happy to chat – thank u for the most amazing day ?⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We did a trek with Mr. Suthep in December 2019, during 4 days. It was a wonderful experience!! Mr. Suthep is professional and very kind. We met the Karen and the Lahu tribes in different villages, we did some bamboo rafting, we ate some very good food, we saw some wonderful landscapes…We were not looking for something touristic like most of the treks that we can find in Chiang Mai. This one was outside the box, and that’s what we liked. Very authentic! I highly recommend.
What an amazing experience! I went for 3 days with Khun Suthep and I could not have wished for a better trekking trip. Khun Suthep was informed and always accommodating, as were our hosts in each of the villages in which we stayed. The hiking was tailored to our experience and preferences, and it was suitably rigorous. Khun Chang, one of the owners and our driver to the start of the trail and back to Chiang Mai, was equally accommodating, kind, and good company. It was an absolutely beautiful hike, with stunning views, quiet evenings, and wonderful cooking (in which Khun Suthep eagerly involved us). More importantly, it did not feel like our stay in the Karen and Lahu villages made tourist attractions out of our local hosts. If you are looking for a high quality trek that is also an ethical way to visit some of the hill communities, absolutely book with the Trekking Collective. I could not recommend it more.
After the trials and tribulations of Covid-19, it has been absolutely fantastic to return to Chiang Mai again after several years away. Several weeks before I left I received an an extremely well timed email from Trekking Collective, with whom I’ve been trekking before, to tell me that they have now reopened as things return more to normal. I booked immediately and was once more delighted with my trekking experience. I did a single day excursion with the very experienced Chang, while Caroline organised things superbly. After a punctual 8am pick up from my hotel, we drove north from Chiang Mai, stopping at Mae Malai market to buy lunch, before heading into the mountains to start our walk. After a great walk up through the forest we reached our lunch spot in a village high in the hills, stopping at a traditional house with the most fantastic panoramic views. Stormy skies greeted our afternoon walk (still the rainy season!) but Chang provided much more effective ponchos than my own waterproofs. As on previous trips to Chiang Mai, I returned to the city happily tired after an excellent adventure with Trekking Collective. In summary, as the shadow of Covid hopefully recedes, it’s great to know that Trekking Collective are back and I’d highly recommend them. All trek lengths (including multi-day) and itineraries are catered for.
Thanks to Trekking Collective, the few days I spent in November 2018 in the hilly jungles with the super sweet guides Ter and Suthep have remained one of the best highlights of all my travels in Asia. Caroline has been super helpful in arranging my trek and it was a delight to hike through these remote and peaceful jungles, reaching charming Karen and Lahu villages at night, eating amazing local food and sometimes participating in cooking. I was warmly welcomed there and it never felt like I was intruding. This made for a very authentic and immersive experience.I’m glad things are now getting back to normal for them and will gladly stop by again at some point as I miss my time in the hills !
