Thai Silk Village is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking 120/27 Moo 3, Chiangmai-Sankampaeng Rd San Klang Subdistrict, 50130, Thailand
We took a tuk tuk from our Chang Mai hotel to the Thai Silk Village. Easy trip, well worth the visit to see how silk moths morph into worms, cocoons and spun silk which is woven on traditional looms. Retail shop very nicely laid out and prices were affordable considering all the labor that goes into the hand-made shirts, etc. Many shirts also made by machine, according to sales person on floor.
You will learn about the silk worm, the difference between Thai and Chinese silk and you can see the silk being spun and then weaved – very interesting. There is also a large shop selling clothes, scarves etc and you can also just buy the material. If there is an item you like but they don’t have your size then they will measure you and make it that day. They will then come to your hotel that evening to fit it. If alterations need to be made they will do those and drop it back at your hotel first thing in the morning – excellent service. It isn’t cheap in the shop but silk is expensive the world over and it is definitely cheaper here than if you bought it in your own country.
This was such a fun and fascinating experience! We got to see silk worms up close and see how silk thread is gathered from their silk cocoons after they’ve become moths. We’ve been had the opportunity to see the highly skilled weavers at work and then they have a huge store with all sorts of silk goods and fabric to buy in bulk. You can tell the quality of this silk is very high. I couldn’t believe how beautiful so many items were. It was hard to choose my souvenirs! Experiences like this really make you marvel as the skill of Thai textile artisans and the ingenuity to make fabric from moth cocoons.
So disappointed. I know a fair bit about silk production, and had expected to see barns of silk worms, but there are just a few bowls of some half dead worms and a pot of hot water where silk can be wound onto a bobbin. We were in and out in less than 5 minutes! If you want to buy silk, then there’s a lot there, but I didn’t go there to buy.
