  1. Very attractive small Lanna-style temple, made mostly of wood. Large wooden columns inside and walls adorned with great old paintings — some in deteriorated condition, but others in quite good condition. This temple is on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, easiest to visit if you have your own transport. Well worth a visit though.

  2. An elegant suburban temple about 2-3 km past the super highway on the road to San Kamphaeng,, to access it turn right at Dhara Devi Hotel and proceed a hundred meters down the lane. Built in the early19th century, the viharn is in classic Lanna style, with multiple slanting roofs and naga heads at the corners. The nagas on the entrance staircase, however, are unusual for their bird’s heads. And the Buddhist angels on the corners of the walls stand on the shoulders of crouching humans. The temple’s main feature is the set of murals on the interior walls of the viharn. Painted in the late 19th century by an immigrant Shan artist, most are in relatively good condition with lots of details visible. The scenes include vignettes from the Jataka Tales– stories of previous incarnations of the Buddha–as well as of daily life, like women preparing food, men building a house, couples courting, devotees listening to a sermon, soldiers riding elephants and marching off to war, mourners crying at a funeral and even a somewhat faded section, just inside the entrance on the right wall, of some of the tortures of Hell. Altogether it is the largest and most fascinating set of old murals of any temple in the greater Chiang Mai area.
