Elephant Caretaker Village – Day tour is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking 50100, Thailand
I am a huge animal lover and have massive issues with elephant riding and tourism in Thailand. This place was excellent, you were not allowed to ride the elephants as it is cruel, and they aren’t at all contained or enclosed, they’re free in a huge jungle area and you must walk to find them, they’re not brought to you. They’re extremely healthy and well looked after, and the staff really care about them, as the place is their home (they live in small bamboo huts within the sanctuary) and livelihood. Really great place, nice to see elephants being treated properly! We met the elephants, fed them bananas, then went and had a mud bath with them and then rinsed off in the waterfall with them, before going and having lunch at the homes of the workers. An incredible experience I will never forget.
Where do I start..I traveled from Bangkok to Chiang Mai,specifically to do the day time tour..I was not dissapointed..The Ele’s at the Elephant Caretaker Village, are owned by the Karen, family and extended family, who all reside in the Jungle at the Park.. Bull Hooks,Riding etc,etc are a thing of the past..There was an info session given by Ken,which was very informative to those who know nothing of the plight of the Elephant..We were in a Group of about 9 people, and were able to feed, bathe and pamper the Ele’s..A most delicious lunch was made for us by the Karen family, of real Thai food..The cost was about $ 100 Aud, which I found to be very reasonable for the day..We were picked up from, and dropped back to our respective Hotels..1 of the family mbrs constantly took photo’s of us, and for us, all of which we are able to upload and save to our own Computers..Unfortunately I had injured my foot in Bangkok, prior to doing this day trip, and had much difficulty at times in walking..These amazing and caring Karen people, ended up carrying me in a sheet, the rest of the way to the platform that we had lunch at..I cannot wait to return next year for a 2 day,1 night visit..i HIGHLY recommend this tour..The trek through the Jungle is not for the fainthearted, you need to be fit to do this tour..In saying that,I had discussed this with Ken,who was grateful for my feedback, and told me he would bring the Ele’s closer to the platform where we had lunch,so there is not so much trekking through the Jungle..
Probably the best option you can get. Instead of going to a huge camp, this one is a bit smaller, but you get to have more time to interact with Elephants, than if you are in a very crowded one. Loved the way they talk and love this animals. All went perfect. It’s 100% garantee a wonderful day
Trip via ute / songtow setup takes 2 hours each way, but you are going out the jungle so this is part of your journey. Pricing is usually 2500 baht (our guesthouse gave us a discount which is appreciated). Elephants are not cheap to house and feed. They eat a lot (2 ute / truck loads each day) and they deserve to be feed properly. The group that visits is small compared to most. You do need to be reasonably fit to take part in the trek to the elephants where you also get to feed them. There are some steep inclines and declines with steps carved into hillside. It is a mud based track – dry for our visit. i would recommend study footwear, not jandals to help with footing.I asked my guesthouse to ask about the fitness level required and what sort of trek it was. I was informed it was a little hilly but not bad, no problem if you need to stop to rest. I did not feel this on the day. Instead had comments of slow slow. It does impact what you are hoping is going to be a day to treasure. There is a small herd of 6 – 4 adult females with 2 babies (4 & nearly 2) on 50 acres. Males are only bought in for breeding purposes – they are not always nice to the young and can have a less moderate temper. The elephants looked in good health, happy and relaxed. No hooks, chains or whips were to be seen. Could see no markings in the elephants skin. I acknowledge I am not an expert, can only give an opinion on what I felt I saw.You wear woven sleeveless tops over your own clothing. The elephants remember the colour and smell, so helps them to feel more at ease with strangers such as us. At no stage with the elephants did I feel scared or threatened, just a bit nervous. They are truly beautiful creatures. it was nice seeing the way the guides / mahout interacted with the elephants. There is definitely a caring bond. On this day we feed them sugar cane. There is plenty to eat for lunch and it was ok. After lunch they bought 3 elephants down the to river where they have dammed off a small section for the bathing to happen in. One of the girls was not eager to get into the river water but once in was in no hurry at all to get out – she was enjoying herself. Then 20 or so metres away is the mud bath. You can help to bathe and mud bath the elephants if you wish and after clean up before the trek back up the hill to the ute.
Glad that places like this exist to protect elephants, however I do not like to see any seating contraptions strapped to elephants. If you want to ride them, then on the neck, just behind their ears.
Amazing place, stunning location in the middle of the jungle. Small centre (only 2 elephants) owned by a family. It was a group of 9 of us and it felt very authentic and natural to interact with the elephants. You get to feed them, walk with them and wash them with mud (so much fun!).Half day is good I think.1600 baht which is cheaper than the big centers around Chiang Mai.Also south of the city where there is less traffic. About 1 hour to get there.Highly recommended!
Ive been to quite a few elephant, riding tours but this is different in a coolway, these elephant have been around people ,and are lovable!you can ride or I choose to walk with em ,and not a lot of people around and they have a large area to roam!
This experience allows the visitor to mingle with the animals in a comfortable, natural setting. The animals are not challenged or forced to do things to amuse the tourist. The elephants have developed a gentle affection for the visitors and their intelligent and kind nature is revealed.
This is one of the nicest Elephants rides we’ve been to in Thailand. Exquisite and small privately owned and they don’t force the animals to do all kind of tricks to amuse the tourists. I just love these big animals and they have such a gentle look in their eyes. Pity I left my camera at the hotel but when in Chang Mai we will visit again.
It was a wonderful experience just being able to interact with the elephants so close up. We had a great day in spite of the weather. Of course we were there in monsoon time so when it rains it really rains, consequently the ground was sooo muddy and the elephants were loving it
