Part of the four island trip (over four hours by private longtail boat from Yao Noi) this place is worth seeing. Book an early tour (depart 0800) to beat the crowds who descend after about 0930 – yukky. If your captain doesn’t want to take you into and all around the lagoon because of the low tide press him – ours did and it was fine/much better experience.
My wife and I decided to visit Ko Hong and pay for a private long tail boat. The cost was 2000 baht (inclusive) and we were dropped off at 0810 and the first visitors on the island. It was as close to paradise as you can get before the hordes arrive. The sand is like talcum powder and we did a couple of nature trails. You cannot access the lagoon on foot.Once all the other day trippers turned up, it became a free for all. There is a designated swimming area and you have to wear a life jacket as the rangers will constantly remind you. The snorkelling is ok as we saw lots of parrot fish. The longtail boat man arrived at the prescribed time to collect us and took us to the lagoon, which frankly didn’t blow us away. We moved on to Monkey island where although you don’t get off the boat, you can still feed them.By paying a little extra for a private long tail boat, you can have as long as you want on the island. You tell him where to go and he will. You avoid the crowds, you’re not dictated by time and you’re not squeezed on a long tail boat with people shoving cameras in your face.Yes, you pay 300 baht each as it’s a national park, but that is the norm in Thailand now.
Like most tourist spots in Thailand, the island (plus surrounding beaches) are being flooded with tourists to make a quick buck with very little thought about the actual experience or preserving the beauty of the area. Full of boats and tourists – way too crowded. The picture sums it up. Shame.
Such a beautiful island in the Andaman Sea. Amazing. We did kayaking here. Amazing scenes, amazing beauty. make your camera handy.
Ko Hong or Hong Island and all other islands in the Andaman Sea are some great wonders of Mother Nature. It is surprising to see the cliffs standing all vertically in the sea waters. Most of them are vertical. One can look at them and keep on pondering for hours, how did they form, since when, and how are they standing like that. There are certain beauties that can only be felt but difficult to explain. The cliffs in Andaman Sea of Thailand are something like that. Snorkelling is definitely very enjoyable for young people. But both my wife and I are quite aged for such adventure.
This main beach of this island has blue, green water. The pristine beach and good snorkeling spot are two main attractions on this island. It also has a nature trail along the bottom of Karst formation on this Island. There is a restaurant, multiple accommodations, and many tables for resting. There are trees covering the inland – perfect to hang hammock and tent for resting while enjoying the cool sea breeze.
We knew it would be busy going in peak season, but it really does take away the beauty and serenity of these wonderful karst islands with the amount of boats and volume of tourists. 300bht each to land on the island, food and drink available, along with basic facilities. The best part of this island is the hidden lagoon which had less tourists.
Ko Hong is certainly one of the most beautiful islands in the Krabi area. Unfortunately its natural beauty and closeness to Ao Nang, generates an endless stream of longtail boats that unload thousands of tourists onto its shores. The only way to enjoy the spectacular beach is to organize your own trip and get there by 8am, then you will have a couple of hours of its unspoiled beauty to enjoy. When the crowds arrive you can go and visit any of the other countless islands in the area, which being less famous do not attract nearly as much interest.
It is jelly fish season, all the beaches were filled with jelly fishes. We also had to pay 300baht per person for the entry to the National Park. The beach is also very rocky. I expected more from Hong Island. Snorkeling was also not an option because of too many jelly fishes. We enjoyed the 4 island trip more.
