THE BEST EXPERIENCE! I visited Happy Elephant Home with my 15 month old daughter and I couldn’t have been more impressed. First of all, HEH is a true sanctuary. I was in awe watching how passionate every member of the staff were about the well-being of their elephants. Our guide, Apple, was amazing. She was so knowledgeable and truly cares about the lives of all elephants. Apple was also super fun! She sang and played with my baby and really made it a really positive experience for us both. The nature walk with the beautiful elephants was incredible. It was lovely to see them having the freedom to naturally forage and and explore. You can tell they are really happy with their lives. We got to sit and watch them play in the water which was magnificent. When we got back up to the sanctuary after the walk we had lunch. The food was as amazing! And we got a couple of lovely souvenirs from the gift shop to remember our incredible day at Happy Elephant Home. I could not recommend this sanctuary enough and will definitely be back! 🐘♥️
What an amazing experience. Apple, our host, was truly passionate about the care of the elephants and took the time to explain each one’s unique story to us before we befriended the elephants. You can really tell everything is done with the elephants well being in mind. All our rescues and are able to roam free and enjoy their lives while being taken well care of by each of the loving staff. We had the opportunity to feed, walk with and bathe the elephants and they were happy indeed! Such beautiful animals and left feeling grateful for sanctuaries like happy elephant home!!
A truly genuine and intimate experience with elephants who are now leading a good life. They have only five elephants, but having so few makes it a beautiful and intimate experience feeding and bathing these gentle giants. They care for the welfare of their elephants and ensuring they live a good life after being abused and tortured for many years. If you do the overnight experience, just be prepared that it is not necessarily ‘glamping’ and a background in experiencing real camping is probably a must! However, you experience a lot in the two days.
We had the most amazing experience at Happy Elephant Home, our guide Apple was so knowledgeable and obviously cares deeply for the welfare of these magnificent creatures in her care. We spent the whole day feeding, walking with the elephants, bathing and interacting with them up close. The elephants are clearly very well cared for here and have everything they need to be happy and healthy. We got to know each of their 5 elephants individually and their unique personalities. We were so sad to leave at the end of the day, what an amazing place and such a special and memorable experience for us and our kids.
Apple was the most informative, friendly guide. She is clearly so committed to the five elephants currently at the sanctuary. We had an unforgettable day.
Went on the half day 7am morning departure excursion with 13.5 year old son. Perfect amount of time for us. Only two other people in our group. Easy pickup/drop off at our accommodation. It was a pretty bumpy 45ish minute ride in a small bus/van, which I think only added to the experience for my son. Myself, I loved watching the scenery. The guide was friendly, knowledgeable. The information session before feeding the elephants in a gorgeous open pasture was just the right amount. The elephants seem authentically well-cared for and it was fun hiking alongside them to and from the water. Highly recommend the morning program bc by the time we were leaving the water around 11am there were a lot of people showing up with other groups and this was during the rainy season. The crowds could’ve easily detracted from the incredibly peaceful atmosphere and beautiful setting. I thought it the perfect excursion to do with a young teen.
Honestly the BEST experience of our whole lives. What a beautiful place, with such beautiful animals. Not one complaint about anything. We had the most wonderful time.I really did my research as I wanted to ensure this sanctuary was ethical, and I found Happy Elephant Home. We didn’t know what to expect, however we couldn’t have felt more reassured that the elephants are treated with dignity, respect and care. The staff are all wonderful to the elephants and you can see how much each of them genuinely cares about the animals, and how much they all love their jobs. There are also lots of dogs, who are all friendly and extremely cute. We stayed in the new villa that was built 6 months ago, which was absolutely beautiful as you had the view of the elephants from the pool and the stunning view of the mountains. The bed was comfy and you had all the facilities you needed. We were given a private tour on both days, by both the owner and mostly our wonderful tour guide Big – who has worked there for 10 years. He made our trip, as he was such a laugh and so knowledgable – teaching us all about the elephants. He was lovely, as was all the staff at Happy Elephant Home. They even remembered my boyfriend’s birthday on the second day and all sang him happy birthday which was a lovely touch. We prepared the food for the elephants, fed them, gave them water and walked them down to the river. You could tell the elephants loved living there as they were relaxed and were very happy to feed on the trees and bushes as we walked down to the river. We enjoyed watching them bathe and enjoy the mud. Overall, it was a relatively hands off experience which made me feel that the elephants didn’t feel overwhelmed with the amount of human attraction. They also gave us two cooking classes where we we were taught to make Pad Thai, Spicy Papaya Salad and Vegetarian Noodle Soup. They also provided a lovely breakfast and dinner for us, so we were well fed. We didn’t know what to expect when we arrived, but we couldn’t have had a better time. As people who love animals, this sanctuary was special and provided an intimate experience where you’re left feeling comfortable about how the elephants are treated. If you’re thinking of booking an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, I couldn’t recommend Happy Elephant Home enough. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.
We had a fantastic day. The Happy Elephant is a non profit doing a great job of giving rescue elephants a happy life. Thanks Apple and the team for the experience and for the delicious lunch.
My husband and I did the afternoon half day session and it was incredible. Big was a great host. Walking with the elephants to the river and watching them bathe was a highlight. It was finished with a short cooking class. Highly recommend!
From start to finish, our visit to Happy Elephant Home was nothing short of amazing. The staff here are incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do. Woody, in particular, was an incredible host—warm, inviting, and eager to share his love for the elephants and the surrounding village. He made us feel like we were part of the local community, showing us around and giving us insight into the culture and way of life. The highlight, of course, was the time spent with the elephants. It was heartwarming to see how happy and comfortable they were with the staff. It was clear that they were treated with the utmost care and respect, never forced to do anything they didn’t want to do. Watching these majestic creatures in such a loving environment was a truly magical experience. Our overnight stay was equally incredible. The accommodations were comfortable, clean, and offered stunning views of the surrounding nature. Falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle and waking up to the peaceful sight of the elephants grazing nearby was an experience we will never forget. If you’re looking for a place that genuinely cares about the well-being of its elephants and offers an authentic, respectful experience, look no further. Happy Elephant Home is a must visit.
