  1. As VIP bus lines in Thailand are concerned, this is not a great bus line. Lots of planned and unplanned stops. No big seats like some of the other VIP bus lines. No help for those who cannot speak Thai. Overlong trips to anywhere. Sorry folks, having said this, in Sukhothai they are the only VIP game in town.

  2. Bus was two and a half hours late into Bangkok from Sukhothai, maybe fifteen minutes of that from traffic at Bangkok end. All the remaining time was lost making little detours and stopping to pick people up/drop people off even if it was literally 5 minutes from the bus station(we made at least 4 stops around one of them.) Really don’t get it as this is why the bus station exists dangit. Seats weren’t spacious but A/C worked at least.Would probably coordinate my timing better next time and do the shorter bus to the nearest train station and get into Bangkok that way.

  3. My hotel rang to confirm, in Thai, that they stop at their office in Sukhothai Historical Park, as quoted on other established guide book sites. Yes, they were told. Wrong! I still got dropped in New Sukhothai. The onboard toilet reeked and only 1 20-minute stop on a 6.5 hour journey. Don’t pay more for their service if you are staying near the Historical Park, choose another company.

  4. As per other reviews I can confirm that1) it is pretty cheap (&includes water, biscuits and a small meal at the services)2)if you’re going to Chiang Mai it’s about the only inexpensive option3) they do seem to randomly stop for “Thais” just around the corner from bus stops. They also seem to do some minor parcel deliveries to bus stations?4) it is slow – ours was particularly slow and took us just over SIX HOURS5) we didn’t have a black tie dinner date to attend so we sucked it up and chilled out about it!!!

  5. Buses are the most cost effective way to get around Thailand. Sometimes they can be faster than the train, sometimes slower all depends. They do stop for Thais to get off close to their locations rather than going all the way into the bus stations, they also do some deliveries on the way but our bus was minimal on this. To go to Sukhothai this is pretty much your option (train requires acrobatics and you still end up on a bus at the end to get into Sukhothai anyway). Bus was airconditioned, they provide water and snacks which was nice, but we also hoarded our own bus snacks (recommended). They also did a stop about halfway where we could get off, use the toilet (there’s also a toilet on board) and buy more snacks if we wanted. Trip was about 5-6 hours but seats reclined and there were foot rests. All in all, for the price it was a comfortable experience and my 6 yo enjoyed staring out at the passing landscape for much of the trip (bonus).

  6. Reached Chiang Mai 2 1/2 hours later than scheduled (7 hour journey instead if the “estimated” 4.5 hours as stated on the website). Made long pauses, eventually the ac stopped working and we had to change the bus (this was not the main reason of the delay however).fyi: if you book online you need to obtain printed tickets by presenting your code at the cashier desk.

  7. Sukhothai Wintour Bus service runs daily service to Chiang Mai in the North, and Ayutthaya/Bangkok to the South. The price is reasonable, at 324TB and includes a small snack and drink. It is best to book 1 day in advance, as the Friday I took the bus to Chiang Mai, the bus was very full, mainly with foreigners. The main drawback is the lack of reliable arrival time. I had see an estimated arrival time of 1:30pm, and told my tour company to call and confirm, as they were meeting me at the bus terminal. Instead, we did not arrive until 3:30pm, or 2 hours later. If I had known, I would have cancelled the 1/2 day tour; as it was, I still had time to visit the Wats, etc. as they close at 6:00-6:30pm. But everything felt rushed. My advice: do not plan any events, the day you take Sukhothai Wintour bus. Treat it as a ‘travel date’, and nothing more.It worked out; but I had a very impatient tour guide, on arrival.

  8. We took the bus from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai, it was fair, you don’t know where to put your legs but it does its job, which is to get from one place to another. Before leaving the station he passed an inspection which was ok. But as soon as they left the station, the driver stopped on the road and the passenger got out and they picked up a newborn dog, they gave it to him on a tray. I don’t know what they did with it, I thought it was in the basket in front with the driver. But when I got off in Sukhothai (6 hours later) I heard him crying in the trunk at 40 degrees and put in a closed box, no water, no air, and terrible heat. Inhuman. I rebuked the driver who looked at me as if I were a being from another planet and he didn’t care, he continued on his way with the dog crying and moaning. Obviously it’s illegal, that’s why they picked it up when leaving the station. It’s a shame how they treat animals, what suffering. I would not pay a euro to this company again, in no way.

  9. Wintour are the only bus company to operate between Sukhothai and Chiangmai. One cannot book direct with the company online but through a third party. This made me uncomfortable as I could not be sure that the tickets would be honoured and there was no way to contact Wintour for conformation. Also there is no indication of where the Wintour bus will stop in Old Sukhothai for the onward journey to Chiang Mai. The bus stop is at the end of the old town opposite a tiny wat and the Abandon Koff Cafe. It is on the side of the road that is going to New Sukhothai. Passengers are led across the road by a staff member holding a red flag to stop traffic! You must exchange your paper ticket from the third party for a confirmed ticket from the Old Sukhothai office (preferably done at least the day before). You will be asked to find your name on the seats indicated on the computer screen. If it is not there, the lady will ring the office at the New Sukhothai bus station and your seat will then be confirmed and you will be given new tickets. There are some seats and a toilet (western style but no toilet paper) at the office. The buses to Chiang Mai leave at 9.50am (9.30 from New Sukhothai) and 10.50 from Old Sukhothai. Prior to ascending the steep stairs to the upper level you are given a drink, cake and bottle of water. If you have booked early enough (bookings open 30 days before departure) you may be lucky to get the front seats which have ample leg room but your view through the dirty windows may be partly obscured by an old non functioning tv screen. The buses are certainly not new or VIP. The seats are reasonably comfortable. Our bus did stop a number of times to let passengers on or off at unscheduled places and although it did stop at a bus station, we have no idea of which one as there was no sign and the bus did not stop for more than a couple of minutes (driver toilet stop). We did not use the on board toilet down stairs as going up and down the steep stairs would have been hazardous on a moving vehicle. The seating is two x two. The bus stops at Terminal two in Chiang Mai and you will need to go to Terminal Three (across the road) if you are purchasing Green bus tickets or any other tickets. The bus is met by crowds of tuck tuk drivers and hotel touts. Get a Grab or Bolt if you are not comfortable negotiating a fair price for your travel to your accommodation. If you are well heeled then it would be better to hire a private car and driver for the journey rather than using Wintour.
