We had been visiting Chanthaburi Province, about 240 km south east of Bangkok, but when it came time to go home to Rayong, about 100 km away we were in no hurry. So rather than take the highway between Chantaburi and Rayong we opted for the Coastal Scenic Drive. I am pleased we did, for we discovered a whole new part of Thailand that we did not even know about before. The scenic drive closely follows the coastline, so you will drive past numerous small bays and coves. Chanthaburi Province coastline lacks the fine golden sand beaches and clear blue seas of other parts of Thailand, but the many hidden inlets, bays, and peninsulas, fishing villages, a restaurants make it well worth the visit. We started in Laem Sing, where we visited Tuek Daeng, an old French barracks from the colonial era, and a shipyard, where we watched craftsmen caulking a newly built wooden fishing boat.We cross the long bridge that crosses the Chanthaburi River estuary, where it empties into the Gulf of Thailand.Just on the other side of the bridge we took a detour from the Scenic Drive to visit the Khao Lao Laem Sing Forest Park. Here, if you have the energy to climb a hill, you will find the remains of an old French fort, called Phairi Phinat Fort, from the era when the French claimed this area was part of Cambodia, which it had colonized. There are still a couple of large iron cannon pointing across the estuary. Then we rejoined the Scenic Drive heading westwards. We drove past many prawn and fish farms and several small fishing villages. We arrived at Hat Chao Lao (hat means “beach” in Thai), where there are countless resorts and hotels, ranging from the upmarket to simple beachside cabins. Here we stopped for lunch at a seafood restaurant, before continue our drive to Hat Laem Sadet, another beach area enormously popular with Thais, although few foreign tourists have found there way here yet.Laem Sadet has an aquarium and the Sea Farming Demonstration Unit, and nearby is the Khung Kraben Mangrove Forest Trail. From here the Scenic Drive crosses into Rayong Province, with which we were familiar, so we turned right to get back onto the highway for our final drive home.
If you’re tired of traveling the same route from Rayong to Chanthaburi via high-paced Sukhumvit road (Route 3), I would really recommend trying this scenic route. We drove from Klaeng, Rayong to Laem Sing, Chanthaburi with a stay in Chaolao beach. Along the way, don’t forget to visit “Noen Nangphaya” viewpoint and stop to take photos at various river crossing bridges. From the bridges, you will see mangrove and fish cages floated in the river.Don’t forget to stop at Khung Kraben Bay to see the mangrove and the Sea Farming Demonstration Unit as well.
This is a welcome break indeed from the highway 3 down to Chanthaburi and as I have been on it quite a few times it was nice to find the exit from the main highway onto the start of this delightful drive. The exit from highway 3 is to rural road 3162 then follow the sign posts. As the road number tells is a minor road so do expect some pot holes along the way but do not let this detract from the things you will see and experience! As the other reviews explain there is so much to see but if you have the time try not to cover all of this road in 1 day as there is way too many things to see, my suggestion is plan a few nights along the way in areas such as Kung Wimaan, Chao Lao and Laem Sing, if you do some internet searches you will find so many places to visit you might find that you run out of time instead of places of interest to examine!
Everyone can drive along seaside, long road. Simple travelling along the seaview. Highly recommend to see the viewpoint.
Right around the roundabout you’ll find local eateries and a small market until darkness. The roundabout with the sculpture though is nothing more than a roundabout with a sculpture.
Lasting for around 66 km, this is Thai equivalent of Route 1 in USA. Views are not that spectacular as on much more famous sister, but still it does offer nice stops on the way and generally laid back atmosphere. Just few tourists visit this attraction though, so it’s kind of hidden gem of the beaten path.
We (8) visited the scenic drive during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The road was quiet. The viewpoints were beautiful even in the rain.
