Ban Ao Salad is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
Ao Salad is the gateway to Ko Kut for tens of thousands of visitors each year, arriving from the mainland 41.8 km away. Ao Salad is an old Thai fishing village on a bay that cuts deep into the north east of the island. Sitting on the balcony of out homestay, we watched fishing vessels pulling into harbour with their catches, along with barges, ferries and small boats bringing supplies to the island, for nearly everything, except local seafood, has to be shipped in from the mainland. Ao Salad village is mix of Thai and long-term staying Cambodian fishermen, and our stay at Kaaten Homestay afforded us a wonderful window into the typical lives of these island people. Exploring the village on foot was fun. We climbed to the top of a hill overlooking the bay where a giant, golden sitting Buddha sits on top of a partially constructed temple, looking out to sea and welcoming people to Ko Kut. Early in the morning we watched saffron-robed Buddhist monks come out on their daily alms round, receiving food and small gifts from the local people. Just below the Buddha are two bronze statues of The Prince of Chomporn, who is credited with being the Father of the Royal Thai Navy. One of the greatest charms of Ao Salad, and indeed all of Ko Kut, is that it has not (as yet) been overdeveloped, like so many other tourist island destinations in Thailand.
First of all you’ll be there probably because of transportation – it’s near the main pier of the island. Big golden Buddha on the unbuilt temple is visit card of the island. Anyway monks are using this temple. Below the Buddha you can find statue of The Prince of Chomporn – the Father of the Royal Thai Navy.
As Koh Kut does not offer to many things except the great beaches we visited one morning Ban Ao Salad. Its the fishing Village in the North of the Island. It was nice have a look an the temple and to stroll around in the small village built en stilts in the sea. Also the way up to Ao Salad with the Scooter offers some nice views and impressions of the Island.
If you come over on Boonsiri then you will land at Ao Salad so we decided to ride back on scooters as to be honest we missed out paying attention to anything as we were that excited to get to our hotelTo be honest there really isn’t a great deal to see here, if you want to get away from the beaches for a while then it’s a nice ride over with the hardest part being a very winding and steep road that descends down to the pier Be careful with the traffic as it does get a trail of songtaews at certain times of the day i.e when the ferry is due in.
Ao Salad is the main port on Ko Kut, an increasingly popular tourist island on the Thai-Cambodian maritime border. It is the main port of entry for the tourists who come here in increasingly numbers, but most of them disembark from their ferry and jump straight into pick up trucks for the ride to their resort destinations. That is a pity, because Ban Ao Salad is a working Thai port and has much of interest for those who would take the time and trouble to seek it out.We watched Thais working in a chain gang to load coconuts onto a barge for transport to the mainland, and watched other small ships being unloaded with all the food, drinks and comestibles needed to sustain life on this island.Higher up the hill is a huge golden Buddha which sits looking out to sea. It is in front of a recently built Thai temple. Here there is also a bronze statue of the Prince of Chumporn, one of the many sons of King Chulalongkorn, who is credited with being the Father of the Royal Thai Navy.If you are hungry, hunt out Kaaten Restaurant. It is a large pink building on the hillside above the port. Its owner, Khun Kaaten, is a whiz in the kitchen and knocks up delicious Thai dishes, especially seafood, at very reasonable prices. The village sits on a beautiful bay and the other side is covered with pristine rain forest. This provides spectacular sunsets if you are here in the evening.
Beautiful area on the north of the island , the main pier into the island if not coming by speedboat that is. Nice place to hang out by the Buddha and get some great shots. You have to climb the stairs in the temple and ring the big bell. You’ll get some great snaps up there. A few nice restaurants by the bay too, worth a trip up here.
Ao Salad, on the north east corner of Ko Kut, is the port of entry for nearly all visitors to Ko Kut.It is an old Thai fishing village, but has expended a little because of the three ferry companies which arrive each day with hundreds of Thai and overseas visitors. Most people head straight for their beachside hotel or resort on the other side of the island, but it is worthwhile to take time to look around Ban Ao Salad.Early mornings watch the fishermen returning with their catch, or during the day watch the small freight ships coming in with all the food and supplies needed to support the thriving tourist industry. On the hill at the mouth of Ao Salad is a huge sitting golden Buddha, welcoming tourists to Ko Kut.
it was nice to be given the chance on an island tour to revisit the fishing village where we landed by ferry upon arrival on Koh Kut.We firstly wandered around the big buddha but weren’t able to enter the temple for whatever reason that I’ve since forgotten, and we then climbed the steps to the top of the tower which afforded lovely views over the village and coastline. The fishing village itself was strung along a rickety wooden pier with a couple of small restaurants, a homestay, and local women mending fishing nets.Very picturesque with many photo opportunities.
A fishing village which has turned into the most used public entry port into Koh Kood. Being commercialized into a pier, the fishing village has lost it’s rustic feel but nevertheless, it a beautiful place to visit. If you’re entering Koh Kood through Ao Salad, you will definitely not miss the giant Buddha statue on the pier. As we had booked a speedboat in and out of Koh Kood, we were not travelling through Ao Salad (where only ferries dock), so we planned a visit here to experience this pier/fishing village. If you’re going out of Koh Kood through ferry, you can reach this place a little early and explore it. Otherwise, you can plan a tour to visit it like us. There is an amazing viewpoint over here, which looks like a traditional temple and gives an amazing view of the entire pier. We had lunch at Captain Nhong Seafood. The food and the view were amazing so it is totally recommended if you’re here.
There’s a tower to walk up to see the viewWe stopped at one of the restaurants for a milk shake and some lolliesNice to see small temple etc
