  1. Rayong Province, 170 south east of Bangkok, is often called “The Fruit Basket of Thailand”, and for good reason.Apart from some tropical fruit that require cooler mountain climates, Rayong grows the lot, from the infamous Thai durians, to coconuts, pineapples, persimmons, jack fruit, logans and lychees, oranges, limes and pomelos, and many tropical fruit that you probably haven’t seen before. It also grows more types of bananas that you thought existed, from small sweet lady finger bananas, to giant red skinned plantains used for cooking. All of these fruits, and more, are showcased in season year round at Thapong Fruit Market, which is 9 km down Highway 3 toward the Rayong provincial town of Klaeng.Once a year in May Thapong Fruit Market stages a festival, with colourful floats loaded with fruit and young Thai men and women in traditional costumes, and free tastings of the delicious fruits on offer. And if you have never tried it before, you should at least try the durian. You will either love it or hate it.

  2. Rayong is often called the fruit basket of Thailand, and Thapong Fruit Market promotes itself as the place to go to buy that fruit. A huge sculpture of a Duran and other tropical fruit proclaims this message at the entrance to the market. The reality is that the choice at Thapong is very limited – certainly far more limited than many other markets in Rayong, and is mainly restricted to whatever is in season.Once a year Thapong mounts a fruit festival, but this has turned into a rip off, with prices way above other sources. In addition to this, the other parts of Thapong Market, particularly those selling meat, fish and seafood, have a decidedly unhygienic air about them and I will not shop there.

  3. It is now the height of the durian season in Thailand, that exotic fruit that smells like an open sewer but tastes like ambrosia. What better time for a revisit to Thapong Fruit Market, which is in the heart of Rayong Province, often called the fruit basket of Thailand.Thapong not only has many different types of durian. The other tropical fruits in season include lychees, rambutan, longon, and mangosteen. Thais often say that when you eat durian, which they call a “hot” fruit, you should eat mangosteen, which they call a “cool” fruit, to balance it.Apart from these season fruits, Thapong has all the usual year-round offerings of pineapple, bananas, mangoes, papaya, and a wide range of citrus.Be careful what you pay. Stall holders often play on the popularity of Thapong Fruit Market to hike their prices above what you will pay at other markets. It pays to check.

  4. This place is super clean, everything is labeled with price tags, it has many spices and fresh fruit selection. You all should visit and be prepared to buy some great stuff!

  5. The old Thapong Market was in two sections, the fruit market and a vegetable, meat, fish, and dried food market. The vegetable/meat/dried fruit market has just reopened after being totally demolished and rebuilt. Now the fruit market has been totally demolished and is in the process of being rebuilt. At this stage the concrete foundations have been laid and it looks as through the new market is going to be about five times the size of the old one.In the meantime, the fruit market is housed in a makeshift area of tarpaulins and corrugated iron. These renovations were long overdue as areas of the market, with open drains, were decidedly smelly and unhygienic.

  6. The second half of a two-stage year-long demolition and rebuilding of the Thapong Market is nearly complete and it expected to open next week.In the first stage the old wet market, with meat, chicken, fish and seafood, and vegetables and dry goods, was demolished and totally rebuilt. In the second stage the old fruit market was demolished and totally rebuilt. The combined market makes in one of the largest in Rayong Province. Each year it stages the Thapong Fruit Festival, featuring the abundant tropical fruits of Rayong, which is often called the “Fruit Basket of Thailand”.

  7. Very good food and fruits are hanging on the trees. Price is good. People are respectful and weather was good

  8. has good selection of various local fruits, includes for eating places (also with sitting), huge covered building, therefor inside nicely cool,.outside presentation a bit warm during the day, tends to be cheaper than inside the building.clean toilets and good parking accessible.
