For Thai tourists, whenever they visit Rayong, one should goes and pays homage to the City Pillar. They believe that they will be blessed with fortune and good luck!
City pillars are found in most cities in Thailand, representing a city’s spirit deity, Chao Pho Lak Mueang, or the community ethos.It is a common belief that King Rama 1 erected the first city pillar in 1782 when he moved the capital of Siam from Thonburi to its present day site in Bangkok. Other cities and provinces quickly followed suit and erected their own city pillars, usually housed in a shrine.The Rayong City Pillar Shrine dates back about 200 years, with the first shrine being build of wood. Today there are two shrines, one in Chinese style and the other in Thai style.The Chinese shrine in particular is a colourful affair, with the whole pantheon of Chinese gods, and mythical animals, including dragons and Chinese lions, and massive and fearsome guardians painted on the huge wooden entrance doors.Rayong City Pillar Shrine is highly revered by the local community and is you visit you must behave appropriately and remove shoes when you enter the shrine.Many locals make merit here by making donations to pay for coffins for the poor and homeless who otherwise would not have the means for a decent funeral.
A few metres from Sukhumvit road in the very centre of Rayong, the city pillar shrine is in a quiet road leading to Yom Jinda.Next to it there’s a chinese temple and people do a lot with incense.
Shrine Rayong no treatment and to educate people too. And with no parking. The place is spacious and clean. If you were supposed to pay homage to Thailand Shrine, a symbol of all the provinces.
Suan lam pong. Pillar city of rayong. One of place you must go if visiting rayong especially if you believe in buddism. The only thing is kinda hard to find parking spot
Stumbled across the City Pillar Shrine on the way to Yom Jinda Road. It is steeped in history dating back to King Rama 1. There is a Chinese connection as well as Thai which makes the shrine very colourful. Don’t forget to show respect and remove your shoes/flip flops if want to pray.

Well maintained and impressive statues and displays. Favourite with locals burning incense to pay tribute. Limited viewing area and nearby parking, so would advise visiting off peak times.

One of the places we visited was the Rayong City Pillar Shrine.In Thailand city pillars embody the ethos and community spirit, and are places of pray, meditation and thanksgiving.The Rayong City Pillar Shrine is located on Lak Mueang Road in Rayong Town. Originally built of wood, the shrine housing the pillar later replaced by a concrete construction with strong Chinese architectural influencesApart from daily worship here, celebration is held each year during the Songkran festival in mid-April.
This Chinese style City Pillar Shrine was first built with wood in 1885 during King Rama III’s reign before being rebuilt with bricks and concrete in 1991. It is open daily from 6am-8pm and is well worth a visit if you want to soak up some local culture. Please remember to act respectfully, do not smoke, and make sure you take off your shoes when you go into the actual shrine.City Pillars in Thailand are the embodiment of the community ethos and spirit, and as such are places where Thais come to pray, to meditate, and to ask unknown deities for blessings or good luck.
