  1. I spent a couple of pleasant hours cycling around the narrow streets and along the seafront. There’s an old world charm to the place. Something that’s becoming harder to find in Thailand.

  2. This week I have friends from Australia staying with me, so it was time to put on my tourist guide hat and show them the sights of Rayong. High on the list was a visit to Paknam fishing village, just five kilometers from the center of town. This fishing village is hundreds of years old, and the colourful fishing vessels docked at the port, are the same as they would have been all those years ago.We came later in the morning, but if you come here at dawn you can watch the ships coming in and unloading their catches, and see the fish merchants sorting the catch, and cutting and filleting some of the fish. The dexterity they show is a performance in itself and you wonder how they still have all their fingers.

  3. Paknam, Rayong’s historic fishing village at the mouth of the Rayong River, is such a colourful place I always include it on the itinerary when I am showing visiting friends around my home province. So today with three friends from Vietnam visiting us, we made another call. While there are some modern buildings and installations like electricity and sealed roads, it is not hard to imagine this place as it would have been a hundred or two hundred years ago.The small, gaily painted fishing boats are exactly as they would have been back then and the “fishwives” sitting on little stools filleting small fish with amazing dexterity conjures up scenes of the past.It is worth strolling down some of the streets leading off the harbour and looking at the small houses clustered on the banks of the Rayong River. If you are an early bird and get here at four or five in the morning you can watch the fishing boats returning to harbour and unloading their catches, with many of the fish still flapping in the baskets.

  4. If you are visiting Rayong make sure you take time out to visit Paknam, an ancient fishing community at the mouth of the Rayong River where it empties into the Gulf of Siam.It is a highly colourful sight to see the traditional fishing boats anchored in the harbour. If you go earlier enough in the morning (5-6 o’clock) you will see the boats unloading their catches onto the dock, and being taking into the fish markets. While now there are electricity lines and street lighting, it is not hard to imagine this place as it would have been 200 years ago.
