Not by air. But by Genting Dream Cruise. Day trip to Nathon Pier and old town. Had lunch, groceries shopping and back to the cruise. A different kind of Fun i must say.
Large ferry port, serving Koh Samui, used by several different ferry companies, it usually well organized for vehicle and foot passenger traffic. It’s a bit of a walk from the ticket offices to where the ferries leave from. There is a market every evening at the beginning of the pier.
It’s a little bit crazy, but with so much coming and going from the island, I think that’s how it has to be. Nathon Pier was a cruise stop for us, and we enjoyed it immensly.Great snacks all around, wonderful massage joint just two blacks away (Chaokan Thai Massage…excellent!), and super-easy access to the town, whatever you might want to do.We took the opportunity to go birding. We just walked right down the pier, about three blocks through the city, and we were in bird heaven. We saw at least three lifers within a block of town (coucals, flowerpeckers, barbets…).One of our favotite cruise destinations!
We visited Koh Samui on a Princess cruise and, as it’s a large ship we were brought ashore via tenders.There are few facilities but there is a large undercover area which some of the ferries use which provides shade & basic toilet facilities.The process off the ship worked well enough but on the return, when our bus arrived the queue was several hundred people long. Rather than stand in the mid-afternoon sun we took to the shade and waited an hour or so for all the buses to disgorge the Princess passengers then joined the line, right at the end.
Lots of boats stop here and the concrete is good to walk on. There’s also a night market at the end which is really good. Recommended for families and eating.
A small place. Some inexpensive shopping eg for silk scarves that cause no problems on the plane. Quiet back streets with wooden two storey houses. Lots of eating places along the beach front street. A beautiful view of unspoiled beach and palms at the northern end where the road turns. Fresh cold coconut water with limes, sipped straight from the coconut.Mornings are better so far as the heat is concerned.
Nathon is a nice town to visit during the day. In the evening a lot of shops are closed. The shops and restaurants are close to the pier and there is a nice foodmarket. Prices are a lot lower than in the rest of Samui.
most reasonable prices on the island for massages and food. always eat where the locals eat!! no tourist tax??
Quite frankly, everything is always so disorganized and dirty….with this being the major lifeblood to outlying islands & the virus issue, I don’t know why someone doesn’t step in & manage the situation. In particular, I am shocked that even the elderly are asked to walk a narrow gangplank when boarding vessels…after lining up in the heat (nowhere to sit) and waiting for 30+min.
Nice spot to hang around dusk to catch the picturesque sunset by the bay /pier area – very nice sight in good weather. The area is home to Seatran Ferry pier for crossing over to Surat Thani. Most shops are closed at night so best to hang around the area during the day. Mostly nice quaint areas to visit for some lunch and nice coffee. Pop community market stalls do happen weekly (I’m not so sure how often), selling a variety of street food and drinks. Nathon is the place for both the locals and visitors.
We stopped here for the day with Celebrity Solstice cruise ship. It was a tendering port and used the local Thai ferry to shuttle us back and forth. The day started out very rainy but cleared up enough to be able to walk around the town. There were several shops, restaurants, scooter rental places and of course souvenir stores. The pier was very long but had sidewalks on both sides of the road. This pier is used by many ferries to go to other islands. There were restroom facilities at the end and some tourist information pamphlets. Beach areas on either side of the pier were very dirty with garbage including big tires in the sand. Around town, there were not many things to do or see. It was good for a couple of hours then we headed back to the ship.
