Suan Son (Phe Arboretum) is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Ban Phe beach Phe, Thailand
I have Thai friends staying with me from the far north east of Thailand, more than 300 km from the nearest sea.Today I treated them to a 100 km circular drive to the beach at Laem Mae Phim and back down the coast visiting other beaches. (See my separate review of Laem Mae Phim).Suan Son, which should be one of the jewels in the crown of the beaches on the Gulf of Thailand, is spoiled by garbage strewn from one end of it to the other. At the eastern end of the beach there are many seafood restaurants but as you drive westwards down the service road these give way to open beach, backed by Casuarina Pines. Many Thais put out their mats and enjoy beach side picnics under the shade of the trees.Casuarina Pines in Thai are called “son” and a park or garden is “suan”, hence the name of this beach – Suan Son.
I must admit that I was a little apprehensive before coming here. I have read numerous reviews claiming that this beach was dirty. Luckily that was not the case when we went there. We were here over a Thai national holiday, and the beach was clean, as was the water. This may not be the most amazing beach in Thailand, with gray sand and a road running behind it, but it is very long and not crowded, even on a long weekend. It’s fairly safe for children, as it is quite shallow with no dangerous currents. The area is great if you have your own transport, as there’s plenty to see in vicinity. It would be good for anyone seeking a more local, non-touristy experience. The accommodation here is Thai oriented and it’s impossible to expect staff to speak perfect English, but we found it to be good value overall. We saw some absolutely stunning sunsets from this beach, and had a really good time.
This beach offers plenty of sand better than the beaches of Pattaya IMO . We were staying at Bangsaray Villa In Bangsaray near Pattaya having been to the beaches of Pattaya and Jomtien this beach was a delight plenty of sand and better water Quality,Bangsaray beach is not so bad but small ,worth a visit From Bangsaray Villa it was about an hour so not so far and worth the time.
Suan Son has something to offer most people, apart from a swim in the waters of the Gulf of Thailand. It has numerous small fish and seafood restaurants on the beach, with deckchairs and tables on the sand.Further along there is a fishing village, with numerous colourful fishing smacks pulled up on the beach while behind them, locals sell the catch … fish, crabs, prawns, and shellfish of all varieties and sizes. There are also peaceful picnic areas underneath the shade of tall Casuarina Pines that line both sides of the service road behind the beach. And, of course, there are numerous resorts, hotels and homestays for those doing more than just a day trip to Suan Son.Even further down there is the Ban Phe Botanical Garden, but I must admit it seems to be a bit disorganized and without a thematic design. On a sour note, too many people leave their picnic rubbish behind to accumulate on the beach.
This is a very nice stretch of beach and suitable for swimming. On the West End of the road, there are rows of tall Casuarina trees lined on both sides of the road. They gave a very therapeutic feel and great for photo taking.
Lot of rubbish on the beach,Area in general is ok but old and rundown.Having just come from Hua Hin, maybe I have been spoiled.
Suan Son is one of a chain of beaches stretching west to east along Rayong Province’s coastline with the Gulf of Thailand.Suan Son in Thai means Park of Pines, so called because of the stately Casuarina Pines that line the back of the beach and the other side of the beach service road. The beach aside, one of the things that always strikes me is the drive along the service road through an arboreal archway of Casuarina Pines. Sometimes, but unfortunately not today, the sunbeams penetrate the overhead canopy and strike down through the foliage to the roadway in a spectacular light show.It is an impressive site.
Suan Son, about 30 km east of Rayong City, is one of Rayong Province’s most elegant beaches. It is so called from the Casuarina Pines that line the beach service road, overarching the road and providing many shady picnic spots. We had a house visitor from Udon, so headed to Suan Son for a seafood lunch. We chose a beachside restaurant with deck chairs and umbrellas on the beach and enjoyed a Leo Beer while we waited for our order. We had 700 grams of king prawns steamed in ginger and basil, a bowl of shelled oysters on ice, served with a chili jam and crispy fried onions, squid stir fried with garlic, and a plate of raw prawns marinading in garlic, chili and lime juice. All of this came to a very modest Baht 1,170.
That’s a marvelous place to stop, not many people, many little restaurants around proposing simple Thai food, we enjoyed for sure the sea food as it’s a specialty there, the little wind was welcomed, the beach itself is very nice, the sea beautiful with not too strong waves, perfect for children. The fishermen village has a little market on the beach proposing raw seafood, that can eventually be cooked on site if you ask with a smile (0.5 USD over charge, whatever you buy).
I like that part of Ban Phe, as it is very easy going and has lots of little Restaurants or you go buy fresh fishes from the market. Good beach for children. Banana Boats available to have some fun. Shade from the trees.
