  1. Hard to rate as some visitors would think Phi Phi and all it has to offer in accommodation, entertainment and activities rates a five. But I was disappointed since I remember the peacefulness and scenery of Phi Phi Don when I stayed in a wooden bungalow on the island more than a decade ago (as a relaxing escape from Phuket). It now seems that you might as well be in Phuket of Koh Samui. Around the main pier there is a congestion of narrow lanes and commercial premises (hotels, bars, tourist shops, tour operators, eateries, a McDonalds, etc.). It must get noisy at times too. It has lost much of its charm and feeling of paradise. Perhaps when you walk further away from the main commercial area there are more pleasant areas to rest by the beach etc. The main area though can get crowded with holiday makers and day-trippers.On this occasion I only visited for a short time as part of a day trip from Koh Lanta that also went on to Bamboo Island and other places to swim and snorkel. Take care when booking these day trips – I booked through Lanta Ununtha Travel & Tour thinking I was going with a slightly more upmarket speed boat tour group (per brochure I was given) but while waiting on the beach to be picked up in the morning a different tour group said I was with them. This could have been an honest mix-up or an arrangement between agents and tour groups that when one boat is full they pass you on to another. Or maybe the agent got a better deal this way. No one explained things and I did not like the confusion at the start of the day. Whatever happened I made the best of it and enjoyed the day out on the water. But regarding Koh Phi Phi Don and having a relaxed tropical beach holiday there are other places in Thailand and SE Asia to explore.

  2. It’s where all the boats arrive to visit the islands so it feels a bit like a ferry terminal. The beach has lovely white sand but you really would not want to lay down and sunbathe here! There are much nicer options nearby. This is where you enter the labyrinth of Tonsai for bars, restaurants, stalls, backpacker rooms, etc…

  3. I wouldn’t chose to come here for more than a day, enroute to more traditional islands. This is where most of the day trippers arrive and leave from. Over commercialised and meeting the needs of a myriad of expectations. Not pretty. Full of tattoo parlours. Beach looks clean. Loads of boats.

  4. this is where the main pier is and where the ferry’s drop you off from phuket. Then the long boats pick you up here and take you to your hotel. This whole area is really cool, there is a great vibe here.

  5. This is the main landing point since the boats stop here. The place is quite commercialized due to that. We went for a day trip from Phuket, were here for 2.5 hours so we strolled here and there, had our lunch, enjoyed some time at the beach and went back. Incase, anyone is looking for a peaceful stay, shall suggest to visit other places of the Phi Phi islands as well

  6. This is the main Pier in Koh Phi Phi Don island and we had visited the same by speed boat during our vacation in Phuket. We were on a full day sightseeing trip of Phi Phi islands and were stopped at this place for our buffet lunch. The Beach here was crowded with all types of tourist boats.

  7. Whilst koh Phi Phi has not been hit significantly by covid cases to my knowledge (in fact, then islanders report the. Population is 100% vaccinated), the impact on tourism has been stark. In 2017 I visited Phi Phi. The change in 2021 is stark. Whilst the pier seafront bears the infrastructure of mass tourism (burger King and McDonald’s prominent) visitors are lacking. Promenades that would once have been crammed are now empty.Which makes visiting the tonsai seafront a very different experience.

  8. This is the main beach pier area of phi phi. I thought the beach was very beautiful here but many boats come in here for lunch I discovered as I was sunbaking. Still the water is very clear and lovely for a dip.

  9. It’s an utterly beautiful island but it’s a total mess! The sewage system is overloaded and the little stream that runs thro tonsai looks almost radioactive! The whole Tonsai area smells of sewage. There was rubbish absolutely everywhere, piles of rubble and broken stuff etc. One of the piled up junk heaps had set on fire when we arrived and people were desperately trying to put it out. This is not the charming Thai hoarding we’ve seen in other places around Thailand, this is just a beautiful island creaking under the strain of far too many visitors. It’s undeniably beautiful tho once you get past the shock

  10. This pier is the gateway to Koh Phi Phi. It is a hubbub of activity. It can be overwhelming with a multitude of different boats and ferries surrounding the area. As soon as you get off your boat , you will be bombarded with people trying to sell you different excursions or ferry journeys. Do your research and be mindful of where your next connection is departing from and with which company.
