If you want to find real artistry that is deeply Thai (not Chinese imports sold as Thai souvenirs in the night market – the same stuff in every night market in Thailand!) go to Intanu for their traditionally-made and traditional and modern decorated masks. Available in various sizes and budgets this is truly an authentic memory of hindu-inspired buddhism unique to Thailand.
This store is amazing. The masks are very detailed and well painted. If you want something that is unique and genuine this is the place. Just be prepared because quality does come at a price.
A good store depicting cultural art. The different masks were of some gods, mythical figures or entities. They were crafted very precisely and had a very real finish. Watching how it was made live there was all together a new experience.

The studio and gallery is about 40 minutes away from the old city. It’s definitely worth the trip if you are interested in Khon and handmade art. Khon masks are not an unusual sight in Thailand but the work on display here is on another level. You can find the classic designs as well as many unique versions which you will not find anywhere else. The level of detail and quality of the craftsmanship is very impressive. The gallery is a comfortable place to browse and the artist is very nice and ready to talk about his process and the meaning behind the pieces. After purchase he carefully wrapped and packed the mask for travel. Highly recommended!
