One of the main reasons that I visited Chiang Mai was to attend a Thai cookery school and try to become a competent Thai cook. However, what soon became apparent was that nearly all the schools offer the same thing – a basic half day introduction to the most well known Thai dishes. I attended one of these – the Thai Orchid school – which was very good, but it can only take you so far.Thankfully I managed to find Dot Cook Thai and ended up doing two days one on one with the fantastic instructor Orn. I learned so much in those two days and feel I have taken away a set of skills to really be able to produce authentic thai cuisine in the future. I learned 5 dishes on each day, but more than that I was taught everything necessary to prepare the food … how to peel and prepare shrimps, how to cut up a squid, etc. There was noone else pre-preparing the food as with the common courses in Chiang Mai, and which of course there will not be when I try and reproduce these dishes at home! Also, you can choose any dish you want … if there is something you have seen or would like to try, Orn will show you how it is done. I was able to learn some very unusual dishes. The setting for the course is also lovely, in the garden of a hostel. And although the course is meant to be 4 hours per day, on both days I was there for more than 5 hours. Obviously having individual lessons is more expensive but given that in other schools in Chiang Mai there are 10 or more students, they are actually charging far more than Orn for the same amount of time. And even if you do group class with Orn, the maximum will be four students. So, I recommend this course without hesitation. Orn is a patient, knowledgeable and skilled teacher and I cannot imagine that there is a better course in Chiang Mai for someone who wants to learn more than the standard pad thai, etc. dishes. I am so pleased that I found Orn and Dot Cook Thai – it really made my trip to Chiang Mai, which had largely been to learn thai cookery, highly worthwhile.
We are semi-professional chefs and photographers writing on a blog about asian street food. So we wanted to immerse deep into the culture of Thai cooking. Before we started at the Baan Boo Loo, we had a long e-mail traffic with the owner and finally agreed upon 15 dishes from Central and Northern Thailand in a 3-day cooking class. The skills of Orn – the teacher – were really excellent, she made every dish from the scratch, we prepared the curry pastes, even the chicken stock was cooked from bones and the dishes where absolutely balanced and delicious. Her staff was really helpful in preparing the dishes for taking the photos, so we worked in a very relaxing ambiance.Absolutely recommendable also for beginners!!
If there is a Thai dish that you’ve been dying to learn how to make, I would highly recommend a course with Dot Cook Thai.We picked the afternoon course which started off with the lovely Orn picking us up from our hotel. She sat down with us and discussed the dishes that we wanted to cook. After agreeing on a 4 course menu, we headed off to the market to buy the ingredients. It was a fabulous experience making everything from scratch, down to using a mortar and pestle to make our own curry paste. The class itself is in an outdoorsy guesthouse run by the same people, set in a lovely garden surrounded by tree houses. Unlike other cooking courses with pre-prepared ingredients, we had to chop and prepare everything ourselves, which we did slowly under the guidance of Orn over a few beers. Even though we had picked a few tricky dishes, we never felt rushed and had the most relaxing afternoon cooking in Orn’s garden kitchen in the middle of a rainstorm.I would certainly recommend this course especially if you are looking for something a little more advanced.
We came to CM specifically to do a cooking class. My partner and I already know many Thai dishes and the generic courses on offer really didnt interest us so we spent some time looking for a reasonably priced, customizable course.Pi-Orn’s class was brilliant. She is quintessentially Thai in every aspect of her interaction with guests, we got to choose 6 dishes we had chosen ourselves and felt relaxed and comfortable learning from her, sharing the space with her family and the occasional other guest staying at the guesthouse. The food was inspiringly delicious and thus was by far the best money we spent on our trip. Fully recommended – though if you’re not staying at the guesthouse we suggest getting in touch early and with some flexibility with dates as this is a family run business and we were lucky to get in with them when we did (we’re hoping to stay with them next time we’re in town)
We really enjoyed our private class. We ended up cooking reasonably indigenous foods – soi ua, khao soy, red curry catfish, tom yum soup, and morning glory. The first two in particular were really enjoyable and interesting to prepare (we had never stuffed sausage into an intestine before), and we learned a lot. It’s surprising that more cooking classes in the area don’t teach such canonical dishes, but I guess that’s why Orn can charge what she does.Going to the market was also a treat, relative to the markets we stumbled upon while wandering around, this was substantially cleaner and more pleasant. The stall owners found our requests for pictures reasonably amusing, and we had a great time. The space where the cooking takes place was lovely, although very buggy.Reccomended to anyone who is willing to pay extra to get personalized attention and wants to choose their own dishes.
Orn showed us a wonderful exeprrience. We selected our menu…then went shooping in the local market. Great fun.Our cooking lesson was very relaxed, we spent about 5 hours and learned a lot about Thai cooking and culture. a very personal and fun experience and Orn…she was a wonderful host and cooking guide. Our only regret was we dudn’t stay at the Baan Booloo guest house house wher the lesson is based as it looked wonderful too. A genuine 5 star experience… Paul and Steph.
I have been to a couple of other private Thai cooking lessons and one Malaysian one back at home in London. This one was the best of all of them. We got to choose all the dishes ourselves so went for ones where there was a difficult technical element that we couldn’t easily pick up from a cookbook – purple flower dumplings, khao soi, crispy pork stir fried with holy basil, and a simple sago for pudding so we could fit in a dessert. We were taught by Mr Naaw (one of their three chefs) who was chosen for us because he has a background in five star hotel kitchens and has run his own restaurant. The tips he gave us were great and we worked through everything from scratch. I am confident that I will be able to recreate the dishes at home. The place itself – Baanbooloo village is beautiful and they really make you feel at home. If I had been more organised I would have arranged to stay there (which also means you get a discount on the cooking lesson). The whole place has been built to incorporate beautiful antiques – carved doors, banisters, tiles – and has a rustic charm.
We booked a private cooking class with Miss Jiap and couldn’t recommend it highly enough for both beginners and advanced cooks! The afternoon started with discussing our menu: khao soi, stir-fried water spinach, green curry with pork, papaya salad, and coconut dessert. We then went to the market together and shopped for ingredients, and headed back to BaanbaaLoo Village to cook. We were amazed at how beautiful the space is! Jiap and her assistants guided us through making all our food from scratch. We enjoyed cooking with complimentary wine, beer, and cocktails – then sat down to eat a multi-course meal together in the candlelight.Overall we were together from about 1pm-9pm. We learned a ton, and it was truly a highlight of our trip. Do this!!
When we were planning our trip to Thailand we knew we wanted to do a cooking school, as we both like to cook Thai food at home. There were a large number to choose from but we searched to find one that was a little more advanced and more authentic. My wife contacted Louis and he arranged a class for our family that was absolutely perfect. To call this a class really doesn’t do it justice. It was truly an experience, from touring the market and sampling local foods to learning cooking techniques and enjoying a wonderful meal with a great group of people. Miss Jiap was our teacher and did an excellent job coordinating everything and showing us how to prepare the dishes we decided to make. She was very professional and knowledgeable but also friendly and kind. We have 9 and 11 year old boys so we wanted a class that would include them where possible, and she kept them engaged throughout. The entire family loved the day we spent with Jiap, Adi, Louis and the rest of the team at Baan BooLoo. Our only regret is that we didn’t stay at Baan BooLoo. The place is an amazing example of traditional Thai architecture and landscaping combined with modern amenities and gracious hosts. Next time we visit Chiang Mai we would definitely stay overnight.
Finding a cooking class in Chiang Mai can be exhausting. There are so many options. My suggestion – stop looking and go here! I’m writing this review TWO years after our class because it was that good and I’ve felt guilty about not doing it earlier. We wanted a personalized class where we could choose the dishes and not just make pad thai and green curry. Our hosts were incredibly accommodating and let us shape the menu to our tastes. We went on a fun market tour to pick up ingredients and snacks, and then spent hours learning, cooking, and enjoying an incredible meal. The class was on our last night in Thailand and they actually drove us to the airport for our midnight flight after dinner. It was such a relaxing and memorable way to spend our last evening. We can’t thank them enough.Oh, and even crazier, my wife realized mid-dinner that she didn’t have her engagement ring on. Without hesitation, the kitchen assistants started digging through the trash and found it!
