Udon Thani Station is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking 41000, Thailand
The facade of the station is quite decorative and like the fact that is so conveniently located in the hub of the city. Only 2 minutes walk to UD town and 10 mintes walk to Central shopping centre. When I initailly came here as a tourist I spent a couple of hours here reading a book watching a couple of trains arrive and generally just getting a feel of the city.
I travelled from Bangkok to Udon Thani by train was a very interesting journey as opposed to a 45 minute flight. Vendors getting on and off at some stations selling food and drinks. I flew back to Bangkok as once I had done that journey by train I wasnt looking forward to doing it again BUT I DID IT !!

We travelled the above as my mate wanted to travel it and see rural Thailand. We saw the countryside in an old diesel train with the windows right down. No aircon here but not unpleasant cost of journey….26 baht
Traveling up from Bangkok it took almost 10 hours. Car was air conditioned, almost too cold. Great trip to take in the scenery but, will catch the plane for trip back. Arrived at dusk. Night market outside station.
Located near the night markets. And UD town. 10 mins to Central Plaza. Didn’t get the train to or from there. It is just worth a look
Great spot for a quick walk around (as the station is located close to shops, markets, cafes and hotels), even if you are not catching a train (see my YouTube) to/from Udon Thani.
Actually the station itself deserves more than 3/5, but because the service it offers – a train ride to somewhere, is very slow and not too comfortable or reliably, I change my rating one point down.
Simple layout makes the station easy to navigate. The 2 security guards (1 day / 1 night) are great & will chat to you, in Thai, after finishing their duties. Sometimes drinks & snacks are on sale. As a train spotter I love it!
I’m here now waiting for my train over 45 minutes late. But no hurry. The station is nice and old looking and staff friendly. Ticket to Nongkhai only 11 baht!
