This essentially is the attitude of the gym. They don’t like seeing people being lazy here… from the pre-training run, if the trainers see you walking it’ll be mentally noted. If you’re lax on the bags, it’ll be mentally noted, if you’re sloppy on the pads… etc… if you’re actually going to fight, you’ll be pushed pretty hard, you’ll already know what prep work is good for you and what you’re doing so this review is more aimed at those who are less experienced. This is a great gym for people who are wanting to improve their stamina and conditioning. Unless you’re a complete beginner you might not find the level of technical instruction you want unless you pester the trainers/have trained there previously/buy private training/or you’re a female. The focus on each session is getting you to go as hard as possible without destroying yourself. The morning session mirrors the arvo session, here’s a synopsis (as best I remember):07:30 Running08:00 Stretching/Wrap hands08:10 Shadow sparring / walking knees08:20 Bag work and then 4x rounds on the pads (5 on a quiet day)08:45 Strength and conditioning – pullups, pushups, situps, kicking and kneeing the bags09:00 You’re doneThis schedule isn’t set in stone, but this is the skeleton of the training session. You might get some clinching practice or sparring practice depending on how many people are training there, and if the trainers trust everyone enough.Despite the intense-ish work load, Jun and the guys are all pretty chill… perhaps with the exception of young Lek, his attitude sucks. Big Lek, Dowden, and Von are all cool guys though. They all speak alright English, but don’t expect to have high end, fluent conversations with them… Jun on the other hand is pretty good with his English, and is very concerned about the social issues on Samui and is really highly regarded within his community as a person who performs a lot of meritorious deeds, though isn’t one to advertise this as such…It helps to understand how Thais do things in regards to Muay Thai, and their general perspective on things in general, it can frustrate people who don’t share this mindset, or it can lead to scathing reviews on this website about how unprofessional it was, unhygenic it was, blah blah blah…Jun can organise the following services for your stay:Accommodation THB6000 per month for a basic studio without WiFi (THB2000 deposit required plus payment for electricity at the end of your stay)Laundry – THB30 per kg from memoryScooter hire THB3000 per month usuallyCan get you a fight if you want itCan get you a good price on tickets to the fightsCan recommend you a great place for remedial massage (Rey)Has probably the most inexpensive fight supplies on the island (his monthly training rate is also arguably the cheapest in Thailand too)My advice to people training here who are new to the sport – don’t go full tilt on the bags while you’re waiting to get on the pads with a trainer… the chick next to you might be slightly impressed at your work rate over that whole one round, but when you get on the pads and can barely raise your leg you’ll be given cause to reconsider that strategy. Watch the Thais on YT etc and see how they work the bag, then watch how they work on the pads, it should give you an idea of the intensity required for each.Enjoy.
Before I went to Jun I was an absolute beginner in Muay thai. After 3,5 weeks of practise I have improved a lot! Highly recommend if you are serious about learning the sport. Facilities are great, Jun is charismatic and the staff is super. I also went to watch fights together with people from Jun. Overall had an awesome time with the people from the gym training and outside training. Group sessions are the same daily so I would recommend taking some 1 on 1 sessions as well. Worth the money! 🙂
Nice private.training. a lot of pad works and there was focus to make myself better. For my girlfriend was it there 4th time ever she did muay thai amd liked it.
Had a great time here learning authentic Muay Thai. Took a weeks worth of private lesson, and took home a lot of useful info. Looking forward to going back there one day!
I went to Jun Muay Thai to improve my technique and fitness. I had an amazing experience and couldn’t of been happier, I now feel like one of the family. Will definitely go back every year.
I went to Juns having a couple of years experience in Muay Thai, and though we focused on fundamentals, the repetition woth the trainers was excellent. They all had a keen eye for little details and this improved my foundations immensely. I always felt I had a great work out, but was able to improve technique wise as well. After a week the trainers felt like family. Great place for people in all stages of learning the art of Thai boxing!
Spent a week training here, got some excellent pointers to improve my technique. Session layout is good, ensuring quality one on one time with a trainer every session, time to practice what you’re learning on bags and drill or spar with a variety of different partners which keeps it interesting, as well.
I’ve been coming to jun Muay Thai for years on recommendation of my Thai trainer ajarn Daeng. Jun is very well experienced and can help with the island/rooms or hotels and motorcycles. Plenty of food nearby and it’s just off the beaten path of Lamai. The trainers will push you as hard as you please. Jun is one of the most experienced trainers and well above the samui average, avoid the new foreigner gyms
A breathtaking experience (literally!). It is a tough pace and I was new to Muay Thai but completely worthwhile to get back in shape as well as learning something new. Jun’s team is wonderful and we had an amazing diversity of students who were motivated and respectful. And that, you don’t find in every boot camp.
Ive trained at a few gyms in thailand but always go back to Jun when on koh samui. Very authentic thai gym and style.Very hard but improves your fitness and strength in no time.Good knowledge from the trainers and a good focus given to technique.Highly recommend.
