We had a wonderful time along mae ping river. we enjoyed the ride. Relaxing, interesting, away from the city. Our captain was so friendly and very knowledgeable. The tour operator was really attentive for our late booking at night. This is one of a must things to do in Chiang Mai. We strongly recommend this!
Just at our hotel now after an unexpected trip down the river Ping. My daughter (13) and I both rated the trio 9 out of 10. We were looking around the city and I just thought about a boat trip so we asked a Tuk Tuk driver how much to a boat trip and he charged us 200baht. 10 minutes later we were at a temple by the river. It was 550 baht each. We had about 50 minutes to wait so popped into the Anatara resort for a drink. We then went back to the boat which was waiting for us. We set off at 3.02pm. We had the whole boat to ourselves with just our captain who left us be. We were taken to a rural area and given a little tour then drunk some lemongrass tea etc. given some ice cream, got to sit atop a little treehouse for half an hour. We then set back and arrived back at exactly 2 hours later. For this to interest a 13 Yr old it must have been fun. Beautiful, peaceful, interesting, humid but chill in the soft two . It was a really unexpected and really fun trip.
We spent a couple of hours on this river cruise one very hot day in Chiang Mai. It made a pleasant change from walking around in the heat. There was a slight hiccup with our booking which we had done online through their website a couple of days earlier. Fortunately we had kept a screenshot of the booking and receipt, because the company could find no record of it on the day. They were supposed to pick us up from our accommodation to get the 11am boat, but when no one arrived, we asked our concierge to call them. 5 minutes later a van and driver arrived and we made the boat with a minute to spare. They still couldn’t locate the booking but did accept our screenshots as proof. It might be better to book through an agent or your hotel. That aside, the boat trip was lovely, and gives you a different perspective of the city. We travelled north up the Ping river for about an hour, then stopped at a ‘farm’ where they grow herbs and medicinal plants, for a cold drink and a light Pad Thai lunch followed by ice cream. There was time for a wander round and a look at the plants before we e boarded the boat and headed back to the pier. Our boat captain was very friendly and helpful and tried to explain the medicinal properties of the plants, as well as serving our drinks and lunch. Highly recommended.
THERE can be few more gentle sightseeing trips than a couple of hours relaxing on a boat.Cruises on the Ping river in Chiang Mai cost 550 baht (about £13) and take you first upriver with the boat bumbling along against the current. The city falls away behind you and everyone is soon seeing lush green banks with isolated houses looming over the river. The turnaround point saw our boat moor at a pontoon and everyone get out at a “typical” farm for a bit of information provided for us by our boat captain. He talked about and showed us just about everything you could think of from examples of the fruit and vegetables grown to a slightly chilling chat about poultry. Why weren’t there more chickens, he said, hoping to coax an answer? When no-one replied he said: “Because the pythons come in and take them.” Cue nervous looks at the nearest undergrowth.I got the impression that quite a few of my fellow passengers didn’t really believe him but I did. A few years ago on this very same cruise our boat broke down and we had to wait nearly two hours before a replacement vessel arrived. During that time our craft was silent except for occasional conversation and even that stopped when, encouraged by the absence of boat noise, a python swam across the river and climbed the bank right opposite us! And it wasn’t a small one!!Our visit to the farm ended with cups of refreshing lemongrass tea and some ice-cream which was most welcome on a hot day.Turning round, we swiftly made our way back to Chiang Mai aided by the current which was now in our favour.I’d recommend anyone to give this cruise a go. It was well run, the captain knew what he was doing and what he was talking about and it was all a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
We took the 4:00 PM cruise which was the last of the day. We went up the river in daylight and returned in the dark which was a pleasant time to be on the river. It would have been a lot hotter earlier in the day. The ice cream and lemon grass tea was a nice treat on the stop to learn a few things about the plants. Our guide was entertaining. Overall we really enjoyed the cruise.
Nice little relaxing tour of the river. There aren’t any big attractions along the tour, which I think is why some reviewers were disappointed. I loved it! The boat ride was really smooth. I would recommend going on the first or second day of your trip because you’ll see a lot of restaurants with a great view of the river and probably want to check them out. The farmers house is a small organic farm where students come to learn about herbalism. Definitely add the lunch option! The juice and ice cream were good.
The hotel pickup and boat trip worked well. The boat trip is very smooth and much less noisy than I feared with a “long-tail” boat. I would have preferred to spend longer on the water and less time (or no time) at the organic farm, but the tea and ice cream were good. We took the 10am boat. It wasn’t full so each couple had their own little seating area on the boat. Those who had chosen the lunch option were a bit surprised to be fed at 11 when we reached the farm. It might be better to take the later boat for lunch although I noticed that every seat was taken on the 11am boat so there was less room to spread out.
This trip isn’t advertised that much which is such a shame. We had the boat to ourselves, the guide pointed out points of interest along the river. We stopped at a traditional Thai farmers house for drinks and ice cream. The guide showed us around the garden telling us interesting facts. We spoke to the lady at the farmers house and she said that before covid they were very busy but since the tourists haven’t returned. In our opinion it was worth a visit.
I’ve done this trip several times and usually take people who are new to Chiang Mai on it. The cruise is about 45 minutes along the river, at first through the city, then quite quickly going through more country areas. It’s pleasant on the river with a slight breeze. At the ‘farm’ a guide takes you and shows you examples of different fruit trees. The lunch is good, especially the Khao Soi) and they just keep bringing you food, drinks, icecream etc. Afterwards they show you some of their historical pictures and tell you a bit about the Rambo film that was filmed there before hopping back on the boat to return to the pier. It’s not expensive and is a nice way to spend an afternoon away from the business of town.
We enjoyed our peaceful trip down the river. You stop at a farm and either have lunch, tea and ice cream or without lunch. We had the lunch option, it was delicous. You are told a little about the various fruit and spice trees at the farm. It would have been nice to have a bit longer on the river or some information about the river, but a very nice experience.
