Celebrating three big birthdays on your beautiful train between Singapore and Bangkok could not have been more special. The welcome at the Raffles Hotel with a Singapore Sling was the perfect entry to our journey. The E&O train has a really beautiful and nostalgic feel. Our Steward Chaiya took very well care of us during the whole trip and made sure everything is perfect. The variety of meals were outstanding and delicious. Beautiful presentation with attention to detail. Nothing was missing. Amazing what the chefs are able to create in such a small kitchen. The table setting with silver cutlery and nice crystal glasses made the beautiful dinner experience complete. We also enjoyed the afternoon Tea time and the extra brunch breakfast that was offered at the Restaurant wagon. We spent lots of time on the Observation Deck and experienced a stunning early sunrise rolling through Thailand. Definitely one of our preferred places to enjoy the journey and a G&T. We had the chance to do two tours during our trip. We really had a great time in Malaisya meeting local people and tasting delicious chicken puffs from the village ladies. The market visit and cooking class on the boat in Kanchanaburi was fun too. Our cabin at the train was beautiful and spacious and nothing was missing. The nights are short with the train moving and a shower can be a challenge. But it is as well the fun part being on a train journey like that. We thought 2 nights are the perfect time. Our birthday trip was wonderful and unforgettable. The E&O Team excellent! We will definitely return to another journey with you! Unfortunately the transfer to the train in Singapore Woodlands was not very smooth. We had to wait at least one hour in a small hot room without any seats available or any water to keep cool. We heard later that train was delayed.
Traveling and sleeping in a train is always a different experience. Taking this this one was a great one. What makes E&O Express may not be the route and the landscape itself, but the great service of the staff, the food and the ambiance and elegance of the train. Since you arrive at the Singapore Raffles hotel before departure you feel special. Once you get up in the train you feel transported in time. A great recognition to the train manager Valentin for his kindness and attention. To our room attendant Sarawut (Goodie) for making us feel special during all the trip. Also to the restauran staff Passayu, Burahan, Wuttiehai and Chaiwat. The chefs and bar attendants. All were great.
Once we boarded we were shown to our “State Cabin”. We soon realised the extra cost was a very worthwhile investment when seeing the standard size rooms. The service we received through out our journey can only be described as outstanding, which was certainly matched by the continuous round of exceptional lunches an dinners. We, along with our fellow passengers, were amazed at how the meals were able to be served on the train.A couple of points to note:1. We did the 3 night trip. The first night was spent stationary- and for whatever reason I couldn’t sleep a wink! It clearly wasn’t due to an uncomfortable bed, as the following two nights I had to be waken by our Steward for breakfast. The motion of the train had no effect on this traveller’s ability to sleep.2. Don’t expect a “Romantic” trip. The Restaurant Manager designates tables, and you’ll almost certainly spend some meals with previous strangers. We really enjoyed the social aspect, but it isn’t a romantic hide away! That said, when we requested a table for 2 we were given it (anniversary treat). Because of numbers on the train meals were served in a single sitting – so these were long relaxed affairs washed down with plenty of good wine. A number of passengers, myself included, what the normal experience of two sittings would have been like – possibly feeling somewhat rushed? So overall a truly memorable journey.
We made the journey from Bangkok to Singapore at the end of a 3 week trip around SE Asia and it was a very special experience on which to end our travels. With fewer passengers than normal because of the Coronavirus, it was more like a party with good friends on our own private train. Nothing was compromised in the service at all. We were privileged to be on this journey and will remember the experience for the rest of our lives. On a practical note, the Pullman compartment was small, but very well designed. The beds were comfortable and we had everything we needed. Sleeping was disturbed at times as the train seemed to go faster at night and did lurch quite a lot, but it was all part of the fun of the adventure. We appreciated the staff, who were always smiling and made us feel at home. The food was incredible and it was a pity that we were so well fed that we sometimes didn’t manage to appreciate each meal completely. If we’d been on the train any longer, we’d have needed clothes with bigger waistbands! By the way, the hill trek was hard because of the heat and we did need time to recover afterwards, but we were still able to party with everyone else that night! I’m not sure what else could be done to warn people, except to say that if you have any doubts, don’t do it. It’s not a competition and there’s no shame in opting for the other excursion.Thank you to Valentin and his team for an amazing 4 days in our lives!
My husband and I love all things Belmond, and have done most of their train trips, so when we found out that the Eastern and Oriental Express had reopened we booked our entire trip to Asia around this train journey. We are so glad we did. The train was absolutely beautiful and lived up to our expectations- the decor was beautiful, and the state rooms were comfortable. The team onboard were amazing and we really appreciated getting to know our cabin steward, Vishnu, our Guest Experience Ambassador, Badizza, Train Manager, Wolfgang, Bar Manager, Kishen (and his whole team), and everyone else who helped make our experience so great! Highly recommend!
This was our first time on the Eastern and Oriental Express from Singapore-to-Malaysia and return to Singapore. We did not travel to Thailand. The train consists of two restaurant cars, the Malaya and the Adisorn, a piano bar car, and an observatory car with attached bar at the rear of train. There are three types of accommodation on board; the presidential suites (largest and most expensive), state rooms and Pullman rooms (seats convert to bunk beds in the evening). The service was exceptional from the day we got on to the day we alighted this fine, luxury train. We include the dining service, the drinks service and the day-to-day service in our review. The food on the train for the four days and three nights was excellent. This included breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chef Andre Chiang was director of food. To review all menus would be overwhelming. However, let us provide the specifics for the final dinner as follows: (1) An olive dish to tease your tastebuds (At this point, I shall make reference to Chef Andre Chiang’s book ‘Life Beyond The Olive Tree’, and his love of everything to do with olives); (2) Soup, which was a clear broth with a stick of, amongst other herbs, lemongrass and chilis. This soup got darker the longer the lemongrass stick was stirred in it. The result was an amazing spicy, hot soup. Delicious; (3) Duck curry with rice (Jasmine or multi-grain). The curry was spicy, but not too hot with succulent, tender duck. There was a slight sweetness from the curry sauce with the addition of pineapple. It really worked well; (4) A plate of Malaysian cheese with fruit and breadsticks. Very nice. Apparently according to our server, a Frenchman had moved to Malaysia and was not happy about the lack of cheese, so created his own; and (5) Creme caramel with a hint of cardamom, giving some Asian flare to this delightful French classic dessert. Again delicious!Cocktails and mocktails were readily available from the bars. We attended the piano bar on board several times, which was always a beehive of activity in the evenings with traditional dancing, Karaoke, piano playing and singing, etc. Most drinks are included in the fare. However, premium brands will be charged.Day-to-day service regarding accommodation or anything else for that matter was dealt with by very proactive, polite and helpful staff. There were excursions organised every day. We attended the trip by ferry to George Town on the island of Penang. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our friendly and helpful tri-shaw (‘A light vehicle with three wheels and pedals, used in SE Asia to carry passengers’) trip. We were brought to temples, British colonial buildings, and a Chinese/Malaysian aristocrat’s home. Please note: It would have been helpful to bring local currency (The Malaysian Ringgit). Were there any problems throughout my trip? One evening there was a water shortage until the next station. We were kept well informed, and this was a very minor problem, which was resolved promptly. We are now just being picky.Overall 5/5 stars for our rating on Tripadvisor. Many thanks to the general manager, Wolfgang, who was present throughout. He was helpful, polite and informative.
