We spent one day with elephant steps! It was such a great experience. The team was amazing and we learned a lot abt the elephants. If you’re looking for authenticity and ethic experience, I would definetly recommend this one.
My family (a couple in our 50s and a teenage daughter) had an amazing day at Elephant Steps in Chiang Rai! Many sanctuaries call themselves ethical and are not, but I believe that this one truly is. The elephants are living their natural life in a beautiful setting, and are not forced to do things for our entertainment. This is clearly a labor of love for Sophie and her staff, and be sure to learn more about the other projects she supports in the region. You can stay for more than just a day, there are options for overnights and spending time with local folks from the hill tribes. If you book a one day visit your day starts with pick up and drop off at your hotel in Chiang Rai, and after you arrive an introduction to the sanctuary and the staff, and they sit with you and offer you something to drink. Then you change into traditional Karen clothing (which is a good idea!) and they show you how to feed the elephants. Fun! After this you trek with the elephants and several of the dogs, (and a guide and a mahout for each elephant) through the jungle trails for 3-4 km, about an hour. You stop for an incredible lunch prepared by a local woman, and eat by a small lake. You can swim there if you like, or go out on the bamboo raft. Then walk back to the main sanctuary where the elephants bathe with the dogs. Enjoy a place to sit and have snacks and drinks while they hang out in the water. At the end you walk around and get to see the other animals. I believe there are 100! Dogs, goats, cows/bulls, geese, equines, etc. There is lots of time to rest, ask questions, learn about the animals there. The people there are so kind and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend this and would return again for another visit!
Ethical and you follow the elephants on the “hike” if they want to swim they swim if they don’t want to they don’t do.And you have a few dogs joining us we had 7 this time
The experience was amazing. We stayed one day with the elephants feeding them and going into the jungle. We had lunch and little chatting with our great guide (boom). In the afternoon we went to thai family house and had a thai massage and dinner. The day after we had a cooking class and we learned how to make nests out of bamboo! Amazing experience with a loto of knowledge on elephants. They found a way to rescue them and let them live quite happily
recently visited here as a couple and had the most amazing day. the elephants look well cared for and you can see the bond between them and the staff. we had a full day feeding, walking and just being around the elephants. they were never forced to move or dealt with in any kind of aggression…only sometimes an occassional nudge on the walk if they were being to greedy 🙂 also the home cooked food we had down by the lake was delicious.
We had a fantastic visit to Elephant steps, an animal lovers paradise. The elephants are well cared for and treated with respect, a truly ethical sanctuary. The forest walk alongside them was a special experience, the delicious lunch by a beautiful lakeside and unique bamboo souvenirs were an added bonus! Thanks to the great staff who were so friendly and knowledgable on the elephants and enviornment. We won’t forget this special day and wish the sanctuary all the best.
If you want a genuine experience in nature with the Elephants, then this is the place to go. There is a genuine love and care for animals and being in their habitat is the way to experience them. From start to finish, this was an unforgettable experience. We were picked up at our hotel and driven to their sanctuary in the middle of mountainous rice fields and jungle. We were given attire to wear during our trek with the elephants through the jungle and truly this was a special day spent with our children away from devices and being immersed in nature with people who genuinely care for community and our planet. Thank you Sophie for you service to humanity and many thanks to the wonderful team of people you have working with you.
First, big kudos to Sophie and the team for the work they are doing. Absolutely incredible! Our trip was amazing! Everything from the pick up at the hotel, coffee and tea when we arrived, to all the thing they provided (clothes, rubber boots, satchel, water). The lunch was great! At a nice lake (hint: bring swim clothes). And the elephants are the cutest, most well behaved creatures I have seen. The dogs are super healthy and everything feels very natural. It was an amazing experience and made us feel good to support such a great cause!
We were looking for an ethical elephant experience in Chiang Rai and this definitely fits the bill. You get to be with 3 elephants for the day and with a kind and caring staff. While the reviews are accurate in that it is very special to be with the animals, feed them, walk with them and they are treated very well, this full day experience is not for the faint of heart. We are from Colorado and in very good shape. But walking in heavy, deep mud in the jungle at a very slow pace (because the elephants are munching and enjoying themselves which was adorable) was excruciating in the heat. We stopped for lunch which was a nice break with some shade but we were at the lunch spot for nearly 2 hours which in my opinion was too long. The heat was unbearable! Then you must walk back the way you came through the mud and thick forest at a slow pace. We are still glad we did this tour and so grateful to spend time with elephants in the wild but one must be prepared to be in this intense heat in difficult walking conditions for several hours. Thank you to the wonderful staff for being so kind to all of us.
What an unforgettable and wonderful experience. Sophie is a true animal lover who has an inmense refuge for 4 elephants, 50 dogs, horses, hens, etc… it is wonderful to see how ethical it is and the place is so lovely. All animals are happy. Spending the day with the elephants was simply wonderful. They are not forced to anything so the walk is quite slow and at their pace. The carers are really kind and patient. Each elephant has its (sometimes) sad past as they used to be attractions for tourists in circus or rides – Sophie freed them. We spent all day with them and learnt a lot about elephants. We had a lovely lunch and spent time in nature. The programme was perfectly well organized with pick up and return to our hotel. We can only and happily recommend Elephant Steps to all animal lovers seeking for a respectful interaction with these gentle giants. Thank you ????
