  1. The Chao Phraya river is truly the heart of this amazing city and exploring the canals gives you another unique view of the city and her people. I was completely charmed by little houses balanced precariously on decaying stilts making up entire suburbs connected only by water. They even have postboxes and “street” lights. The monitor lizarrds lazing in the sun and little kids buzzing around in the family longboats add to the charm and remind you that you are a long way from home. It’s not the sort of tour you’d do again and again, but every visitor to Bangkok should do it at least once!

  2. We bought 2 all day tickets at 200 Baht each from the vendors at Pratunam Pier which was nearest to our hotel. Starting here, at Pier No.1, you head towards the Phra Sumen Pier No.7. The canal ends with a lock gate to the main river. The all day ticket allows you to hop on and off along the way. The canal boats are fast, and you can get splashed if another boat is coming the other way. The water is dirty, so try to avoid the splash if possible. The engines are large diesels, some 6 cylinder, others V8s. They all belch smoke. When passing under a low bridge, the canopy cantilevers down to enable clearance which is simple and ingenious. You will see first hand how some of the townsfolk live in substandard homes, and experience the smells of the canal. Towards the end of the canal, it passes through the old town which is particularly interesting. At one of the piers, possibly Pier 4, you can get a Tuk Tuk tour of various attractions for a small charge. I would highly recommend the canal tour, but make sure you hop back on to a boat from the same organisation! No need to book, just turn up!

  3. The boats go om Bangkok canal from the Chao Phraya river to Pratunam which is next to Asoke Mall. 100 Baht 1 way, 200 bats all day.

  4. Well this was expensive! 200 baht for an all day hop on hop off ticket. This can be done much cheaper (20 baht per trip) if you go on the local boat, but you will have to jump out the boat as is barely stops. The canal itself is a very interesting way to see the city and convenient to get to some of the most popular attractions.

  5. I went for a boat ride in April, the hottest month of the year. It was awesome!! I recommend you take private boat from operators you can trust. The ride usually take at least two hours or so. It’s the best way to relax I guarantee.

  6. The orange boat ride offers a pleasant view of Bangkok city. If you are lucky to bag a seat instead of having to stand along the journey, there are many opportunities for photo taking. Occasionally, you will get some river water splashes. Look out for river boats traffic during peak hours.

  7. Our hotel was situated close to the canals and this was the first time we had used the canal network to discover the delights of Bangkok. The boats run frequently and cost no more than 15bht. Getting on and off some of the boats can be a challenge and you need to know where to get off. Having the right change or small currency is also a good idea. It’s a great way to see the real Bangkok

  8. It was interesting enough to see the city from a different perspective. However, the river is extremely dirty. There are lots of companies offering this service. It seemed as though it was difficult to understand what we were paying for and what we got. We were sold a 2 hour tour that was not quite 90 minutes. Again, it was an OK experience but definitely not a must.

  9. Just a fun way to see how people live on the water . I was staying up in Nana area so it really was great to get to central area and river Cheap and local – I use public transport in Bangkok most of the timec

  10. With over a thousand separate canals making up a distance of over two thousand kilometres, they remain an important part of the lives of many of its citizens. Short of having one’s own boat or hiring a private boat, there are only two public east-west long-boat lines that traverse the San Saep canal. The first, the Nida line, originates out in the eastern Bangkok suburb of Bangkapi and ends at the central interchange pier at Pratunam. The Golden line links Pratunam pier with Panfa Leelard (or Phan Far Lilat, as its sometimes spelt) pier, close to the Khao San district. While I did not take a ride on a recent visit, a day-long ticket allows unlimited travel and costs appoximately 200 baht, but individual fares are between 10-20 baht depending on distance. Rides ares fairly speedy but because the boats sit quite close to the waterline, there is a slight risk of getting wet, so beware. Along some stretches of the canal are walking paths – very pleasant to walk when the weather is cool.
