Were volunteering in Sangkhla Buri for about 6 months and this was my main place to go to whenever i needed something in food way. Got most things.Do not miss the Rotee lady! She makes the best rotees and samosas for a bargain price! Just be sure to come early in the morning other wise she will have run out. And be respectful as she doesn’t seem to like rushed westerners. But then again, who does?
During the day the main portion of the market is inside the covered structure opposite the 7/11 which has several stalls selling a wide variety of the freshest fruit some of wich you will not recognise. There are meat stalls with flies in abundance & fish stalls, with the the fish swimming in large containers. On one side of the covered market consists of a row of local restaurants each selling local delicacies. In early evening, a new market appears in the road beside the row of restaurants consisting of small stalls selling even more food which is cooked in front of you & the smells of the fresh food is as varied as the fare.
This is known as the ‘Border Market’ which is right on the Myramar-Thai border. Products here are mostly brought over from Myramar including jewelry, clothing, foods and fine wood furniture. There is also cheap beer and spirits available with no restrictions on purchase times. I purchased some Holland and Myramar beer which were good price. Market open every day.
We ate here twice whilst in Sangkhlaburi and it was so authentic and small town. Food was great, cheap I believe 30thb a plate for basic dishes, generally full of locals, with few tourists in the whole town in fact. Sangkhlaburi is wonderful and I’d definitely go back
The old town was flooded when a dam was built. You can catch a boat ride to see the old ruined temple. The village is beautiful. The food is magnificent. The people are awesome.Go to sleep early. Wake around 5am. You’ll hear the monks chanting. Head out with some food and drinks, wait for the monks to come by, and donate. Get yourself some spiritual merit points.I stayed at The Cat & Oil, very close to the river. The top two levels have amazing views over the river. The staff make some of the best food I’ve ever eaten.
This is a local market held on a Saturday night in the market square. The items on offer range from Burmese wooden items bought over the border as well as local arts and crafts made in Sangkhlaburi. All of the items are very competitively priced so no need to haggle. Sangkhlaburi is developing fast and becoming a popular weekend spot for Thai’s.
The Sangkhlaburi Market stretch from the Wooden Mon Bridge to the Wat Luang Pho Uttama. The merchants in the market are friendly and welcome visitors with open arms. On the weekend in November 19th & 20th, the merchants prepared various kind of foods to offer free-of-charge to anyone. The boats also offer complimentary boat ride to visit the Underwater Temple which normally is their main income. They did this good deeds in remembrance of the late King Rama 9. They also refused to accept gratuity when offered. What a spirit for the Mon villagers living in Sangkhlaburi!
