Not so sure I agree with the previous review that it is smaller than the Saturday night market, I actually thought it was much bigger, well longer and a great deal more food outlets. What is great is that it is mostly for Thai people but of course Tourist are very welcome but there were few obvious foreigners. The street is blocked off and has 3 lanes of stalls, not easy to cross over thru the middle lane so be prepared to walk the whole market. Some of the food outlets are very adventurous like the fried insects, very interesting!. Some very good bargains for presents. A very relaxed local market for a Sunday evening.
Went here for a feed and lots of food options. Was a lot longer than expected. Is a walking market. Lots of locals too. Most local shops and resteraunts shut late on Sunday too so try head to the market for dinner if eating late.
I wouldn’t bother with this market unless you were really bored on a Sunday night. The market is full of everyday items like shoes and clothes (a lot of knock-offs).
It is big, but a lot of the same type of stuff sold. Not good for souvenir shopping. Closes early – at 9.30 many sellers packed up. Hard to find taxi/tuk tuk to get back – had to walk through abandoned streets of Chiang Rai to the hotel.
We loved this night walking market – big variety of food, some souvenirs the same as other markets but we also saw new things such as candle lights made of recycled tins. We thought the range of wraps & scarves was better than other markets. My partner who is more food adventurous than I, tried crickets. The music & dancing was an added bonus. In Chiang Mai, we couldn’t walk as the market was so busy so we much preferred this market. Market had great energy & we loved it. Would go again.
Smaller and a less crowded than the Saturday Walking Street. Great exercise. Love to buy the little round “Sai Oua” sausages on a string (mostly vegetarian, haha) and the fried crickets (two kinds–black, white…we prefer the white crickets) and many other inexpensive things to eat. Lanna culture show near the middle and have contemporary music, usually mellow guitar music and vocals nearby. Can get a foot massage if you’re tired of walking. Also has new and used clothing. A few t-shirts with Thai writing, some for adults and some for the babies. Also some local Chiang Rai area handicrafts, similar to the Night Bazaar, but way less touristy and 10x better food. All in all, a nice mellow way to spend a Sunday night. Tips: Go early around 6:30 and take a Grab app taxi ( the SE Asia version of Uber) which is less hassle than driving and finding a parking space.
Every Sunday evening, San Khong Noi Road known as Happy Street becomes pedestrian for a few hours and welcomes the stalls of large night market. A nice evening to do some shopping and eat on the run after buying your dinner among the wide variety of food stalls. Theres a stage with local performers and a place where locals come to dance in a very friendly atmosphere. Of course many arts and craft are on display, great place to pick up souvenirs. I really love the Chiang Rai Sunday Night Market since its exclusively of locals, foreign tourists are very very few.
Happy street opens only on Sunday from 6pm to 10pm. It has a lot of vendors selling foods, vegetables, every day products. There are plenty of restaurants on the same street. It is just one really long streets. It is really tight walking around that place. Good way for locals to get their food and have family time.
Stumbled upon this local market on our way to more famous (and more touristy) night bazaar (we didn’t go at the end). Very local market with plenty of foods and other stuff to buy and some artistic performances like local dance in traditional dresses. Prices are local as well, which is very good indeed. Worth visiting to experience how locals spend their day off.
We did the entire Sunday walking street (San Khong Noi Road). We were disappointed after going to the Saturday walking street in Chiang Mai. There was plenty of street food here in Chaing Rai walking street, but very few hand made goods to buy. Definitely a walking street geared towards locals. We still had a good time, but Chiang Mai is much better for tourists, if you want to buy locally made goods and souvenirs.
